tommy burns vs floyd patterson who wins and how i dont know much about burns so replys are very welcome
I would favor Floyd. Burns wasn't a bad mover, and he had a pretty good right hand. He might catch Floyd over the jab with that right. But, I'd favor Floyd's more modern style, especially his hand positioning, over the style that Burns fought with. I also think Floyd's hand speed and combination punching, which was much more of a boxing staple than when Burns was fighting, would be a factor.
Interesting match up, and bound to be exciting. Patterson would hold the size advantage, and he had better handspeed. You all know Patterson well. Burns power was off the scale for a fighter his size. He was basicaly a middleweight who could demolish any slow moving heavyweight who was relativley easy to hit. In addition to this Burns was one of the best infighters the heavyweight division has ever seen. He could throw short punches like Joe Louis. He was just much smaller. If these guys met then Pattersons speed and size would allow him to dominate the fight, but Burns's power and also his infighting ability would keep in on a knife edge and make for some explosive moments.
I think Burns could be trouble for Floyd. From what I know, Burns was an animal in the trenches. I'm not sure how Floyd would deal with him. Floyd would be winning the count in punch stat numbers, but I could picture Tommy dropping Floyd, more than once. In one of those "explosive moments" janitor talks about, Tommy might even stop Floyd. I would love to watch it, but I wouldn't bet a dime on the outcome.
thanks janitor! of tommy burns i only know his historical significance but little of his actual ability (which, when compared with his successor if often dismissed). thanks for the lesson, have to take another look
