What observations have you guys made about Tommy Farr's fighting style? I'm watching his films now, and I'm surprised to see that he's much more of a fighter/slugger than I imagined. For some reason, I always imagined Farr as being a clever jabber and mover; I figured that's how he survived 15 rounds wiht Joe Louis. The films suggest otherwise, however,

I'm noticing that Farr spends a lot of time in a crouch or a semi-crouch, looking for opportunities to come over the top with his right hand, or to throw bundles of punches with both gloves.

Farr definitely looks durable and rugged. He has a strong upper body, and his hips and thighs are solidly built.

He is not nearly as much of a boxer as I thought.

Farr has a fair jab, but not much power. He gave a prime Louis a real fight. He was durable and tough.

I notice that he does move and jab a lot, but he's definitely not a cutie. He looks more like a fighter/slugger who boxes when he has to, out of necessity, and not because boxing tactics come naturally to him. More than anything else, it looks like he's trying to get inside to slug.

farr had a clever style that mike tyson apreciated. It looks like a slugger style but realy its not. he was quite "side on" with a high left shoulder low left hand guard. had a neat jab used to keep distance. farr would make a gap with the jab and pounce inside finishing with a right to the body and left shoulder charge from where he could sheild and work close at the same time. Like schmeling he would adjust his footing depending on the range. clever enough to bring right foot forward with a right hand and get away with it. His footwork was light and like all booth fighters could realy smother, spoil and coast.

Okay...I'm watching Louis vs. Farr now, and I can see that Farr is strictly a boxer/mover/jabber in this fight. He is more of a fighter though against Baer, Braddock, and Foord.

I think Farr actually stunned Louis with a straight shot in round 11. I think it was Round 11. Let me know your score card.

anyone else seen him against red burhman? I thought it prety close. I get the impresion that tommy was a stuborn mule who could give anyone a hard fight with out standing out. his win over manual abrew showed some power.

    Choklab,

You sound like a very good new poster! In which fights do you think Farr was robbed. He never won in the USA.

Ive seen most of the braddock fight and it was close too, i dont think it was outrageous robbery. Most of the guys he beat in london beat him in USA. peter wilson thought he was lucky to beat laughran in london.

when farr got up early in his fight with louis before the beginning of the 15th round, he said it was his greatest bit of kidology ever.he was a good boxer with a good left jab, titaniun chin but only a fair right hand.
probably his greatest win was against the german walter neusel.after neusel beat jack petersen for the 3rd time, tommy got in the ring and told neusel he was next.
tommy bach was up for it and KOd the german in 3

yes, he despised neusel. i have a documentry on farr and have read his autobiography. he took some critism for not going to war, he went in the raf but was discharged with "bad health" even though he was well enough after the war to mount a succsesful comeback. neusel was his answer to the war.
