There's a load of Tommy Farr stuff on the BBC website. This is a good piece, from 1964, Farr with (former British, Empire and European welterweight champion) Eddie Thomas, and Harry Carpenter. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/9042510.stm
i liked hearing about farr going out early for the last round in their fight and beckoning louis on in. kidology or what ?? farr was exhausted
I liked Tommy's quote whenever the Louis fight came up "Every time I even HEAR the name Joe Louis,I start bleeding...." One of Britain's best heavies.
I like the way that he atributes the decline of British boxing to the wlfare state. Carpenter asks Farr about Britains failure to produce a heavyweight champion since Bob Fitzsimmons. I have often reflected that Farr might have been the man to break that 100 year drought if his prime had ocured in the mid 30s say.
I absolutely agree with you. Tommy was probably as good as most of the contenders around then. He went 1 - 1 with Jimmy Braddock, did n't he ?
No, it was Max Baer that he went 1-1 with. That in itself puts him among the absolute elite of the contenders in that era.
5 years earlier or 10 years later Farr could certainly have been world champion. He was wrong about Henry Cooper against Floyd Patterson though, if the 1966 fight is anything to go by.
What a great resource... Watch the vid on Welsh Mountain Fighters. Awesome! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/9028282.stm
...when fqrr was asked if he really fought joe louis, he always replied "if i didn't, then i don't know who put these knobs on my head."
