Just a pug called welter champ at 1 time by someone. Study his record. 226 fights about. Not great but to fight that often and some comp were former champs... Men were just tough back then. Would love to send for instance a gervontes davis back to Freeman's time to fight someone like Freeman with total experience but not a champ. I bet the old fighter wins and easily.
Yes fights everywhere. Cheap kinda. No bigmouth thug wannabes. Respect expected and given. Ali ruined it all with his mouth. Take thefighters from 1890-1958 and give me them. Even though that means I miss Duran and Frazier and other favs, you can have 1958-now. That goes for sports and everything else but my beloved R&R. Can't give up the tunes.
Great call. Anyone who had to fight Gorilla Jones that many times is legit. Really puts into perspective these recent generations (and my own) for how easy we have it. It's like when one hears the story of Francis Ngannou... I didn't have the most privileged upbringing, but holy crap, some people come about in a completely different world.
I like your sentiment, but I don't quite understand your approach when you say "(j)ust a pug called welter champ at 1 time by someone." By someone? I feel I need to set the record straight lest some of your readers misunderstand. Freeman was the undisputed welterweight champion of the world by virtue of his 15-round decision verdict over Young Jack Thompson in Cleveland on September 5, 1930. Let that sink in for a bit. He wasn't just "someone ... with total experience but not a champ." He was universally recognized by everyone in the world who cared as the one and only welterweight champion. Your approach totally understates his accomplishment.
Could you point me in the direction of some footage of these super experienced non-champions from Freeman's time, who would easily beat Davis? Seeing them with my own eyes, would be helpfull when forming an opinion.
Am I really the only one, who would like to hear some examples of those non-champions from a century ago... that were too experienced for today's best boxers to handle?
