But we've seen time and time again, with Mayweather opponents, theyre punch output drops straight away.

When you throw punches and miss, you become afraid of being countered and hesitation kicks in.

Im not saying Floyd would beat Robinson, but hed certainly push him all the way.

Regarding workrate, Floyds workrate is low, but his accuracy and timing is one of the best.

    Regarding physical advantages

    Robinson was 5'11 with a 72 1/2inch reach.
Mayweather is 5'8 with a 72 inch reach.

    Robinson is just slightly taller.

    Turpin could KO Mayweather.

Same day weigh in, Mayweather would have to tangle with some pretty tough Middles.

Aside from having the best defense ( maybe in the past 50 years ) , and counter offense out there, Mayweather has a very good chin at 147 pounds.

The man is hard to hit period. While I think Hearns length and power would win him a decision, Hearns was rather unique in his stature and power at 147 pounds.

If you have to say Sugar Ray Robinson, you're really putting Mayweather in a small club.

The only names I'd make a favorite over Mayweather at 147 pounds is Hearns, Robinson, Leonard, and Armstrong. I think Mayweather is that good, and could beat any of the above four names, though Hearns might be the toughest for Mayweather.

At age 38 Mayweather is outclassing younger men who will be or can make the boxing hall of fame.

We're talking about Sugar Ray Robinson here.

    I can't see it.
There are better welterweights to put in with SRR.

His accuracy is good when it's good, but when he stands at range throwing jabs that are tapping on his opponents gloves that's not impressive enough to save him against SRR.

Robinson was slick and utterly ferocious.

    Robinson is 3 inches taller.

No, I'm responding to the thread premise.
SRR is an even more choice obvious to KO Floyd than Hearns.

I think Mayweather is a good welterweight champion.
I actually thought I rated him higher than most at 147 but recently there seems to have been a very strange shift in perceptions of Mayweather.
A year or two ago most people here were saying he wasn't a top 10 welter and would have been beaten by the prime natural 147ers, now he's rated almost up there with SRR, it's odd.

Both of those men were on the best runs of their career and coming off career best performances against undefeated world champions.

I know, but Floyd Mayweather aint no mug either.

A very small club, Leonard, Hearns, who else?

Youve only watched the Pacqiauo fight, right?
I admit that fight seemed a bit of a sham, but regardless, Pacqiauo had a snow***** chance in hell of winning.

Secondly, Floyd has made a career out of fighters who come at him aggressively.

    Mayweather is slick, and smart.

The smarter guy tends to get the better of the aggressive guy.

The most important attribute here is reach and their reach was more or less the same. Ok Robinson had 1/2 an inch advantage.

Regarding Floyds firepower, what do you base that on?

Because if he had little or no firepower, these guys would have walked right through him.

When a fighter has no respect for whats coming at him, he walks right through the opponent. As far as im concerned, no ones ever done that to Floyd.

Or is it because Floyd hasnt knocked anyone out?

If we go back over the past decade, why dont we look at some of his opponents?

(at the time of fighting Floyd)

De La Hoya - only stopped once, by Hopkins at MW in what was a suspicious KO anyway.
    Canelo - never been stopped.
    Hatton - never been stopped.
    Mosely - never been stopped.
    Maidana - never been stopped.
Ortiz -only stopped once, by a big puncher in Maidana.
    Marquez - never been stopped.
Cotto - stopped twice, once by a prime Pacqiauo and once by a cheat in Margarito.
Guererro - never been stopped (fought big puncher in Thurman recently who was unable to stop him).

Several welters would have as good or better chance. I wouldn't pick any to outright beat SRR though.
Mayweather has about the same chance as Pernell Whitaker, not much of a chance.

No, I've seen most of his fights. Mayweather was doing the same when he fought Oscar De La Hoya. That was a PRIME Mayweather. ODLH was past prime.

Pacquiao had little chance of winning, as was said before the fight.
It's nice (and valid) to say "Mayweather would always have beaten him", but we rate them on what happened.

Yes, not of the SRR type though.
Let's get real here, he can't cover up and pot shot SRR from off the ropes. Anyone who has seen SRR will immediately understand that.

SRR was as smart. Better fighter, better boxer, better puncher.

He doesn't have the firepower to trouble SRR.
SRR isn't walking in face first.

Mayweather loses to SRR, possibly gets KO'd. It's a safe enough bet.

Putting Floyd in with SRR is unfair to Floyd. He's not at his best at welter, and Robinson was the best at welter. It wouldn't be that competitive, and I'd take Robinson at 6-1 odds.

What is Floyd going to do in there, exactly? Run, jab, and potshot? Robinson is taller, throws every punch in the book, wrote a few extra pages in fact, and hits like a freigh train.

I can't see a winning gameplan for Floyd.

I'm pretty sure Robinson out-thinks Floyd in there too. You don't have such spectacular success in this game just by hitting hard and fast.

It's utterly ridiculous to even think Floyd has a chance against SRR. It's a joke really. One I won't entertain more than this post.
