It's hard to think of a fighter who could beat Hearns at 154. Certainly not Vasquez. Vasquez would get destroyed.
It's hard to think of a fighter who beats Hearns at 154. Vasquez definately isn't one of them. Julio gets destroyed in this one.
I certainly would not bet the mortgage on Vazquez, but moreso than Norris or Wright or just about any other LMW, Vaquez has the kryptonite to beat Hearns... Iron fists, iron chin, great will. He found the chin of Wright, arguably a better boxer than Hearns, many times over. He also gave Whitaker a tough tussle, a far better boxer than Hearns. And if it comes punch to punch, I see the possibility of Hearns whiskers fading before Vazquez's. I color this match-up intriguing.
Vasquez doesn't quite have the punch to get Tommy out of there. At least 9 times out of 10 he is going to have the **** beat out of him before he can effectively mount an offense to break down Hearns. He isn't going to do it with one punch.
Vasques would have a chance to last the limit IMO, in the same way that Doug DeWitt was able to at 160. The guy DID have a chin, though it would be sorely tested by Hearns.
Argentine fighters may not all be a stellar great like my man Monzon, but they were known for their great chins, and didn't go down that easily.
JCV also punched like a horse kicks so vice versa on the chin testing. Hearns would have to box first and punch second, wear down Vazquez and let the opportunity to finish come to him. If he presses from the start he could quickly be in deep waters.
Hearns would stop Vasquez after about three or four rounds of him opening up furiously. Vasquez was very, very good, but not good enough to hand with JMW Hearns, where I think Hearns was at his best (and would've been better if not for constant hand injuries)
