Who wins this fight and how does it go? How will Monzon react to a guy who takes away his height advantage? How will he react to a much faster guy with great power? Can Hearns stamina and chin holdup or will they fail him like they did against Hagler and Leonard. I see a Hearns decision here.
Monzon preyed upon smaller and sometimes older fighters moving up in class, but all of them were shorter than Hearns and lacked his power. As such Hearns is not your typical welter or jr middleweight prey. I think Monzon would have some issues with Hearns speed, and for my money Hearns at 160 hit harder than Monzon. As such Monzon would have to change up his usual comfort zone and press it a bit more. The question for me is would Hearns fight smart enough to win? If Hearns falls into Monzon's trap, his chin would likely get exposed later in the fight. A fascinating match-up. I'd favor Monzon in 12 or 15 rounds but would give Hearns a 1 in 3 chance for the upset.
Solid post. I also want to add that Hearns' natural size is much bigger than perceived. If I recall correctly, he outgrew 147 by the time he was 22 years old. He was no natural Welterweight. 154 pounds is widely considered to be his best/natural weight class. But with his height the extra 6 pounds probably has little to no effect on him moving up from light middle to middle.
Hearns starts out strong but Monzon takes control late in the fight and either wins decision or stops him late.
Who says they all lacked his power ,only you. Valdez,Mundine,Tonna,Briscoe, were all very good bangers at 160lbs. Valdez scored 42kos in 63 wins. Mundine 64 in 80wins and he fought from middleweight to heavyweight Tonna 37 in 44 wins Briscoe 53 kos in 66 wins How many middleweights did Hearns knockout? Hearns has 46 kos, 30 of them were at welterweight!

His first 52 opponents were journeyman types or newbies, inflating his KO%. And Valdez lost a few of them. Mundine. Overrated. Fought often in Australia. Which ranked middleweight did he every KO? Mundine was already KO'd three times prior to facing Monzon and was stopped 10 times in his career. A very overrated fighter who never regained his top ten status after facing Monzon. Tonna. 5'9 1/2. Already stopped twice before facing Monzon, and 6 times total in his career. His first 39 fights are littered with journeyman and guys with losing records. Not too impressive. Tonna lost almost all of his big fights. Briscoe. 5'8" tall, 71" reach. NOT COMPARABLE TO HEARNS He had 10 losses before facing Monzon. His first 55 fights were full of journeyman. Like the others, he was a loser vs the best middles he fought. As for Hearns, clearly he was taller and longer. And I say faster than any of the above names listed. He KO'd men as high as Cruiser. Hearns hit hard enough to floor Leonard twice in a fight, Leonard had a pound for pound chin. He also stung Hagler, in a short fight. Had the fight been much longer, we'd get an idea of how much punishment Hagler could take. Want more, he flattened Roberto Duran with one big punch. While the fight was below 160, Duran is pretty durable. Power is tied to class. Hearns hurt, floored or KO'd the best. I think Hearns power is pretty much a given at 160 pounds. Seriously, you are questioning a pound for pound punching all time great vs a list of mere contenders ( with inflated KO records ) who quickly dropped out of the top ten seen once they faced Monzon. Take a cue from the others. My first post was spot on.
So because Hearns was taller he hit harder at middleweight than those I mentioned? I'm questioning Hearns punching credentials at160lbs? I'm saying it is far from a given that he hit harder at middleweight than Tonna,Briscoe,Valdez, and Mundine Hearns was a p4p puncher .At Welterweight! Leonard was an ex-welter, Duran an ex- lightweight! The very fact you have to use them to boost Hearns' credentials as a puncher at 160lbs proves my point! I ask again, name all the middleweights he kod!
Hearns was only involved in one 160 pound fight that didn't end in him or the opponent being KO'ed. He was an absolutely devastating puncher at 160 pounds.
Tommy Hearns carried KO power all the way up to 200 pounds. This coming from a natural Light Middleweight. His power at 160 was scary.
He only had 5 fights at 160pounds! Scored 2 stoppages and was stopped twice! How does that prove his middleweight power?atsch
It doesn't prove that he didn't carry it. The Barkley and Hagler fights went 3 rounds. Hearns stunned the GOAT chin at 160 pounds with just a single right hand. You cannot honestly say he wasn't a massive puncher at the weight.
