Are you aware Hearns broke his right hand in round one? I'll let the Scarecrow clean up the rest of the mess http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/othersports/article-1265737/Marvelous-Marvin-Hagler-v-Thomas-Hitman-Hearns-25-years-on.html
Great post! I give Hearns some sort of punchers chance against anyone even at 160, however slim. He had a very unique set of skills and i fully believe he could bang at 160. You could see the effect his power had on guys like Roldan and he had the reasonably durable Andries up and down like a yoyo even at 175. He did stop Hagler in his tracks for a split second but never landed his best Sunday punch. Monzon is the obvious choice for most of the reasons you stated. I would pick him everytime. He was a truly superb fighter and extremely consistent. It took me ages to warm to his style and skillset but once i did i realised just how effective he was.
Carlos wasn't fan friendly was he? He looks workman- like rather than gifted, yet he ruled the roost for 7 years and 14 defences. I suppose it's a case of " if it works use it". He had a very effective jolt to the body that slowed down opponents and he maximised his reach. He seconded Carlos Herrera against Maurice Hope in London and I stood quite near him ,he was slender with wide shoulders ,but I was surprised he didn't look as tall as I thought he would, he was just under 6 feet but looked taller in the ring.
A lot of Monzon's fights had strange endings, corner stoppages, some opponents appearing just not wanting to go on. He must have been a very discouraging fighter to face.
:dealExcellent summary...I've spent years tying to explain to the obtuse why Monzon was a special fighter, and I'm still exhausted from the effort. Instead, I'd love to be able to find some of the excellent articles by really wise writers that I've read in the various boxing magazines over the years to bolster my claims...but in a nutshell, that post by McVey is just excellent. Monzon would have ridden out any output by Hearns without hitting the deck, frustrated him, would have roughed him up like the devil, clobbered him with that 1-2 of his, with a debilitating, clubbing right hand that would have spelled the end for Tommy by about the 9th or 10th round. Monzon would have shut down and dominated Hearns. Monzon's in-the-ring coldness and control was almost unnatural....he could dope out and find the answer against any of his opponents...not dramatic, flashy or exciting maybe, but damn, he was super effective and clever.
To be honest I don't think many boxing writers could have described Monzon any better than you have in this post. Excellent.
And what exactly did he break it ON? There is every reason to believe Monzon's cranium, and indeed his chin were the equal of Haglers `As McVey stated Carlos ws a ring bully, and it wouldn't take him too many rounds to find out he could bully Hearns. This all ends badly for Tommy I'm afraid.
