Calzaghe fought great everytime he believed he could be beat - the bigger the fight, the better he performed. He'd beat Tommy either by late TKO or probably wide UD.
P4p Hearns was demolish Calzaghe. At 168 you have to favor Calzaghe. Hearn at this point was later in his career.
While Hearns wasn't the same at this point in his career, at the higher weights, he might have the right style to beat Calzaghe anyway. Hearns's chin was shaky, particularly once he left 154, but Calzaghe isn't a big puncher anyway. Calzaghe is fairly heavy handed, but since his hands are injury-prone, he really loads up on shots anyway. He slaps and throws arm punches a lot, although he is very good at mixing in a "turned over" punch once he has suckered his opponent in with the arm shots. Maybe the younger Calzaghe can stop Hearns, when his hands didn't give him as much trouble, but he also had less experience at that time as well. I can envision Hearns boxing very well behind his jab, mixing in his right cross, and winning a decision over Calzaghe.
Calzaghe would be too big for Hearns. I would also favor Calzaghe over Hagler for the same reason. I would rate both Hagler and Hearns ahead of Calzaghe on the all-time list, but in a mythical head to head matchup I'm going with the bigger man.
bigger man? well 168 isn't Hearns' prime weight but he's still two inches taller and has a wingspan 5 inches longer.
Prior to Calzaghe v Lacy, many people would have favored Lacy over Hagler. I don't think Hagler would have fared well at 168 against the best that 168 offered. I'm a big Hagler fan, but I'm trying to be realistic here!
i think this is one of those "if he can survive the early onslaught" fights and i think joe can. joe has a good chin and tommy wasn't blasting opponents away opponents above 160. i see tommy outboxing joe for the first 4 rounds, but tommy at that stage was probably a league below jermain taylor stamina-wise, which is bad news against joe. so i'd say a late tko or a close but clear ud for joe.
I wouldn't underestimate Hearns in this situation ... I think that Hearns could box ... had power in both hands and was pretty fast himself. I'm going to go with Hearns ... TKO mid rounds ... this brings me back to the Sugar Ray Leonard fight ... although he lost, he showed many dimensions in his fight game. He's stronger than Calzaghe ... I don't think the chin issue is serious ... because the guys who got him out of there most of them had one punch power and could change a fight with one punch and thats including leonard.
don't even compare Lacy to Hagler. **** has no comparison at all. Jeff Lacy is like the Bryant Brannon of Roy Jones resume. Roy Jones and Calzaghe both schooled them. Respect to Brannon tho he had heart and was really cool after the fight. Lacy really isn't ****
