Agree. I think Gavilan was a little better puncher than some are saying. I think he could hurt Hearns especially late in the fight after a fast 10 rounds or so. The Kid by TKO
Bump Was about to create this thread as the Gavilan-Basilio match I just watched got me thinking about who might win between the Kid and the Hitman.
I'm picking Kid Gavilan by decision. I don't see Hearns KOing him, and Gavilan will set the pace here. Hearns will fade over 15.
Fighting in Kid's era of same day weigh in, Tommy becomes the get-hit man. In our era where Hearns can gain enough weight to qualify in a heavier weight class, can go either way. Manny Steward relished those fighters who ballooned out their division like Hearns, Moorer. Also: While I agree that most amateur losses doesn't equate to a loss as a pro, I take exception with Hearns losing to Perpetual Motion Aaron Pryor as who we know was way shorter. So if a workrate of Pryor exhausted Tommy (which is how I think he won) It would be difficult to conceive Gavilan wouldn't present similar problems.
every fantasy fight you can imagine has been done before in the classic forum...don't worry about it .
I don't think anyone can outbox Hearns but other factors come into play over 15 rounds. Durability and stamina being two very important ones.
Jesus where did them 7 years go? I’m surprised I was able to string a sentence together properly considering I can barely achieve that now lol.
Agreed, though he punched hard as a welter he wasn't physically strong at 147 , Tommy's power wanes after 5 or 6 rounds and the Kid stops him just like Leonard did. I always thought Hearn's peak was 154 too
