Yes he was, at 147 - 154. He adapted at higher weights and could still outbox fighters there, but he was not nearly as menacing as he was below 160. People get a little carried away with his incredible KO's at lower weights when it comes to fantasy matchups at higher weights. Recently, some poster used the KO of Duran as an argument that Hearns would KO Roy Jones. Hearns is a legend and very likeable, but not unbeatable. Kessler beats Iran Barkley, and easily. Kessler also beats anyone Hearns beat at 147 - 154 and he would last more than three rounds with Hagler. Her is a massive SMW and if he ever lands one of those uppercuts that Calzaghe had to eat, he has a chance to win by KO. I am not saying I favor Kessler, but it's not a no brainer for Hearns.
He also outboxed SRL for several rounds before being KO'd. Kessler hits way harder than SRL. Sure, Sugar Ray had the explosiveness and speed, but Kessler is actually taller than Hearns, he doesn't need blinding speed to land on him. The question is, can Thommy avoid being hit flush for 12 rounds?
Hearns KO 1. Hearns being an ATG from the golden age, is granted with magical powers just like all "old schoolers". No chance for anyone.
Hearns went the distance against all the champs or contenders he fought at 168 or 175, except for Andries, who went 10 rounds. Now why exactly is Kessler going to get laid out so early?
