Hearns gets rocked once or twice but all in all he outboxes dlh from range while landing THAT big right constantly until dlh gets tko`d in rd 13 or loses big in a 12 rder. :good
De La Hoya's chin would see him survive Leonard's punches, who in my opinion had power close to Mosley at 147lbs. Hearns was seriously wobbled against Leonard on three occassions before getting stopped while sagging into the ropes. He was as good as floored with the ropes keeping him up during the 13th round, a count was then administred. A good chin in my opinion isn't just about not going down, but not showing effects from an opponents punches. Hearns was also all over the place on a few occassions when he rematched Hearns. Hearns was also stopped by Hagler, although he showed a very good chin before getting stopped. Kinchen floored Hearns early and had him all over the place. Roldan had Hearns wobbled for a few moments as well before coming back to stop Roldan in the same round, the 4th. And Barkley sparked Hearns with one shot.
Hearns would have whupped De La Hoya. Personally i feel De La Hoya's optimum weight class would be 140 where he wouldn't be too drained as in the lower classes but still be big and strong enough for any of his opponents. At welterweight De La Hoya was still very good but Hearns was great. Hearns would be able to outbox Oscar and check his chin from time to time and mix in some wicked body shots. Eventually i would expect Hearns to stop de la hoya. It is not likely that De La Hoya will just destroy Hearns once he hits him with a left hook. Hearns was stopped by Leonard because of fatigue more than anything else and Oscar isn't known for coming on strong in the championship rounds. Oscar usually fades as the championship rounds approach in 12 round fights so i doubt he will have it in him to get to hearns in round 13 and 14 like leonard did. The Hagler fight doesn't indicate a weak chin either that fight was war and someone was gonna go not to mention Hearns weak legs in that fight. Hearns is one level above Oscar and would likely win the fight.
The kinchen fight was at 168lbs and Roldan and Barkley were huge strong middleweights. It is very possible that Barkley and Roldan would be able to hurt and stop De La Hoya at middleweight. Oscar didn't look to impressive at middle at all so mentioning those fighters against hearns at 160 has no bearing on Hearns chin at 147 only the leonard fight is the one people point to against hearns at 147 and that was more due to exhaustion than anything else. Hearns has a average chin.
Where are you coming from, Mars or Pluto?. I said De La Hoya had a better chin than Hearns. If you look at my last couple of posts you will see they have been stricly presented to comparing the chins of both. I actually said Hearns would beat De La Hoya. If De La Hoya managed to get inside and land, it could well be Hearns getting smashed into next week. I have to go with Hearns, on points.
Exhaustion is part of the game. And Leonard's punches were more to do with Hearns being stopped more than anything else. Every fighter will be more acustomed to absorbing punches early than late. Hearns' punch resistance was fairly week the first time Leonard landed any significant power punches on him. Leonard circled the ring and looked to avoid Hearns' punches during the first 5 rounds. But when he opened up inside and caught Hearns during the 6th, the alarm bells were ringing. Emanuel Steward even said he was thinking about stopping the fight at the end of the 6th round as Hearns was so badly hurt. Don't give me the exhaustion nonsense, which comes with the territory of showing a good chin. De La Hoya was exhausted during the 12th round when he went toe-to-toe with Mosley when they first squared off, and took a few hand grenades. He wasn't going anywhere.
Hears wins this by UD or late stoppage because Oscar can get brave and against Hearns that could be fatal
With what? His jab? That's his main weapon. He's certain not going to outwork Tommy or have an advantage in his lateral movement. Tommy's bigger, stronger, more mult-talented on offense and none of DLH's top strengths are maximized by a major weakness of Tommy's. Unless Hearns refuses to take him seriously (ala Barkley), he's got too much to lose to DLH. Oscar may make it competetive, but when he starts running out of gas late, Hearns' right hand will end it.
You forget, that Hearns also wasn´t a stamina- wonder at 147 lbs, IMO at WW he´s very overrated head-to-head. DLH had enough power, skills and speed to KO him, I´m not saying he would do it, but it would be a close fight...
Yeah, his stamina was a major issue, against the likes of Leonard. Against DLH, who's going to be bouncing right in front of him the whole fight and using his hands for most of his defense, Hearns gets to save his energy. Oscar's jab isn't going to speed up the process, but Hearns rights will affect Oscar as the bout wears on. Without that power, DLH can possibly jab his way to victory. With it, Hearns is going to bleed DLH and make him foot heavy - along with the natural stamina issues. DLH just doesn't possess the punch at 147 to take the fight out of Hearns sooner than Tommy will out of him. JMO, of course.
I agree. Id have to give Hearns the nod, but De La Hoya would not be a walk in the park. One crucial area De La Hoya has over Hearns, combination punching. I'll actually make a hell of statement, and probably most will disagree. De La Hoya's combination arsenal is among the very best in the sport over the last 30 years. His ability to ping off 3-4-5 punch bursts with variety, a sight to behold.
I'm not in anyway trying to make a case for De La Hoya beating Hearns with the following, but The Ring magazine picked De La Hoya to beat Hearns back in 1999. The case was mainly based on De La Hoya's left hook measuring up against Hearns' right hand. Quote "when two bombers meet the best chin wins". They said De La Hoya would KO Hearns. They felt that De La Hoya would be able to withstand Hearns' right hand more than Hearns being able to handle De La Hoya's hook.
I also completely agree what you wrote. I also didn´t mean, that I favour DLH surely, but I would see it like 50 %-50 %, because DLH´s quick, hard and unpredictable combinations would trouble Hearns...
