Who do you guys give the edge to in a middleweight clash between Roy Jones Jr and Tommy Hearns. Roy Jones IMO was at his very best when he was a middleweight, he looked unstoppable and very well may have been. Tommy Hearns a legend in his own right had a very solid run at middleweight and light middleweight though being defeated in his biggest fight at middleweight against possibly the greatest middleweight champion of all time Marvin Hagler in the infamous 3 round War. Emmanuel Steward always said that he felt Thomas Hearns would be a bad match up for Roy Jones Jr. I do see where Steward is coming from as Hearns is a very good conventional fighter with one of the better straight right hands of all time which may be trouble for Roy Jones in his leaping in approach its hard to imagine that he wouldn't catch at least one of those Hearns right hands flush or possibly even Hearns devastating left hook its just a matter of whether Roy Jones would be able to take the punch. Both fighters chins have come into question in their careers. Though its hard to picture anyone beating Roy Jones Jr as a middleweight I feel myself slightly leaning towards Stewards opinion and could picture Roy Jones getting caught clean and knock out by a Thomas Hearns right hand. I do think Roy Jones could also potentially rock Hearns and follow up finishing Hearns off. Either way I think this would've been a excellent fight to see and wild match up with either fighter being able to potentially finish the other off in any round of the fight. I slightly favor Hearns in the match up overall.
Toss up both have suspect chins, Hearns has a great jab and brutal power, RJJ has great speed and very good power
Hearns chin was much better than Jones' Getting Kod by Hagler and getting Ko'd by Glen Johnson is 2 different things.
And I suppose getting KO'd by the 24 - 4 - 0 Iran Barkley is something to be proud of then is it? Why do you bother posting when you are obviously clueless?
Roy has the foot and handspeed to get past the reach. I don't think this is a good match-up for Hearns, who dominated in that ring by keeping people backing up away from his jab and right hand. Roy doesn't have to duck and weave, he can just superman past.
I honestly don't know who would win. Both have the power, and hand speed to Ko each other, at any given time in their prime's. However I do know it is stupid to compare which one was KO'd by whom. Both had great talent, and a bit dubious chins. A pick em fight.
Would be an interesting match up, but I think Jones wins. About Jones chin, it never really was suspect until near the end of his career, perhaps because no one was fast enough to really test it. In any event Hearn never did have a great chin. But what I feel the deciding factor is the speed and the bodywork of Jones. As Jones said "Ya must of forgot" how wicked his body punches were. Hell he broke one of Virgil Hill's ribs with a body punch. I wouldn't bet a lot of money on either fighter, but if I were betting on anyone it would be Jones.
I've got to give it to Roy. Above middleweight he's clearly the better fighter. Anybody who could hit as hard as Jones at middleweight through light-heavyweight would have no trouble getting Hearns out of there early. Hearns may be the better technical fighter, but Jones is a cut above physically and his speed and strength would tell.
Yes, Jones as a superior athlete with a great MW punch would overwhelm Hearns. Who was great, but could lose to the very best.
Hearns' powerful right hand would never be able to tag RJJr the speed devil cleanly, or enough times to do any damage. Jones either by lopsided decision or late TKO.
Roy Jones was at his best at `168. He did burst on to the scene at `160 and KOd Thomas Tate in devastating fashion. He looked ordinary against Hopkins. With that said Jones had obvious talent, speed of hand and foot. I could see him catching Hearns early and putting him out. I do think Hearns had enough handspeed to touch Roy Jones and earn his respect at least. If that happened Jones could get outboxed from the outside. I wouldn`t bet this fight either way. If I had to choose Im gonna say Roy Jones finds a way
We'd know who the winner would be by round one. Both guys were front runners and if there is any stylistic weakness here, it would show up very early. Tommy came out very aggressively early, and tended to settle down after a few rounds, but essentially he always fought the same kind of fight. I also don't see Jones doing anything different from the norm; he barely ever had to.
Close one. Roy's greater variety may win the day for him. If the Hitman lands one of his missiles early on however.................
Prime Roy had a much better chin than the Roy that fought Glen Johnson. He took many punches in his career that were much harder than the Johnson love tap on the ear...
