At 160 pounds I believe that Jones would have been badly clowned by Hearns. Toney and Hopkins were well trained and highly technical fighters. They lost clear decisions to Jones. But they were relatively unathletic, slow and weak compared to Hearns. Styles makes fights. Tommy Hearns was extremely fast, long, powerful and highly skilled offensively. Jones would be made to look off balance. He would look out of sorts. His trickery and hands behind the back stuff would not work against Hearns. A well schooled, well trained, extremely fast and powerful boxer-puncher.
You may be right. But, Jones could turn the tables and end the fight with one punch. So Hearns would have to fight his best every second of every round.
Jones would be cautious against Tommy, very wary of that right hand. Hearns by UD. he just has to remember to not drop his right hand
Hearns between jr. Middle and Middle would of been considered an ATG their if wasn't for Hagler. Jones jr. Was murcurial at Middle. It wouldn't be easy, but Hearns height, speed, jab, and ever threatening right hand would've made Jones fight defensively. Unlike a Toney or Mccallum who Jones could get away with his hands held low, and leaping in with shots, Hearns jab would off set Jones speed (like it did with R.Leonard) but unlike Leonard Jones wouldn't attempt to walk through the fire to get to Hearns. It wasn't something he ever showed in any fight, win or lose. So I see a pretty dull fight to be honest. Hearns winning the dec against a reluctant to commit Jones.
Toney was unathletic? He was a top notch high school quarterback. Jones, Jr's reflexes were of the highest order and his style was formed completely around them (thus his decline when the reflexes went)... Personally, I think he KO's Hearns inside 8. In particular, his much superior and much more athletic (yes, more athletic) footwork would befuddle Hearns, beating him to the pass more and more as rounds mounted. Remember that two of Hearns' KO losses were at 160. And one of his victors was the less than great Barkley.
Hearns would do well against Jones Jr. He could use that jab and even the threat of the cross to keep RJJ on the defensive. I think that eventually Jones catches him though and stops him. Roy could crack and he was very strong at `60. Guys like Thomas Tate who went life and death with Julian Jackson couldn't go 2 with Jones. He was an unreal talent. Hearns didn't have the consistent defense IMO to last in this one.
Toney was a good athlete. Roy Jones in his prime just made him look that way. His ability was uncommon.
dont forget roy could potentially one shot tommy to the body like Virgill hill. Hearns would have to fight the perfect fight.
I don't see how he'd have been clowned. I could envisage him losing a points decision if he'd have been cautious, but after watching Roy for years, I have to believe that if Roy had taken the fight, he'd have employed a strategy of all out aggression.
Roy would either have passed up on the opportunity, or he'd have taken the fight and fought Tommy in the way that Ray, Marvin and Iran did. Let's give Roy some credit. He was very smart. He would never have tried to outbox Tommy. Why would Roy have got knocked out? Why would that have been a given? Tommy was very vulnerable, and Roy had incredible speed and one punch knockout power.
I respect your opinion, but I don't agree. Roy was smart. His 2 options would have been: 1. Take the fight and be aggressive. 2. Pass up the opportunity. He wouldn't have signed for the fight and then tried to have outboxed him in a cautious manner.
