Is that why he outlanded him in every category except for jabs in their fight?

Whitaker would also lose quite handily to Hearns, and a decent few other WW's as well. That is not his best weight class, nor is it Floyd's. The difference is you guys are ignorant enough to assume Floyd would dominate in any weight class he attempted to fight in.

The jab was the key ... he would walk right into it ...

Whitaker wouldn't lose to Hearns ...

I don't think there are many boxers in the history of boxing that could beat Pernell in his prime.

    TO ALL:

SRL didn't out slick Hearns ... he wore Hearns down who had trouble cutting off the ring and wore himself out due to over training and lack of endurance.

The defining moment of that fight was when Leonard landed a rib crushing blow to Hearns followed by a right hand to the jaw that had Hearns badly hurt.

Once Leonard smelled blood ... he went in for the kill ... he didn't let up and threw alot of punches ...

En route to the stoppage ...

WW was not his prime, and yes he would most certainly lose to Hearns. This is almost as bad a matchup for Whitaker as it is for Floyd. Whitaker would give Hearns more trouble with his dirty tactics and inside skills(as he showed against Tito even when old and shot for the first 7 rounds), but he'd also be in harm's way more than Floyd, as he'd actually try to win, rather than survive. It's possible both fighters get stopped at some point(I think Hearns stops both over 15, but not Pea over 12), but I guarantee you Whitaker would put up a better fight than Floyd, who'd be on his bicycle all night.

I'm not a big Floyd fan but threads like this are a trap to try to minimize the achievements of great fighters going above their best weight. This is a big reason why P4P does not mean all that much to me.

I all depends on the weight. I'd pick Hearns over Bob Foster @ 147, and I'd pick Foster over Hearns @ 175. I'd pick Hearns over Marciano @ 147 but Marciano would crush Hearns @ Cruiserweight.

@147 we have one guy, Hearns, at his starting, and possibly most effective and devastating weight class of his career. In Floyd, we've got a guy @ 147 which if anything is above his most effective weight class. I think Hearns would take this fight either by decision or by TKO (how good is Floyd's chin? hard to say). Hearns was beating Leonard, who is arguable as skillfull as Floyd, but packs way more power and killer instinct than Floyd. Hearns wins @ 147 or higher.

How bout taking the bout @ 140. "Come on Tommy, come on down, lets get it on. I know your skinny @ 147, but I'm better @ 140 so let's start there and then have our next fight @ 147." I'd take Floyd @ 140 or below.

When Hearns was in a boxing mode, he could control people with his damn jab alone. He's probably the only fighter in history that cannot be "outboxed"

Do you base his inability to take bodypunches off of his fight with Leonard? Not many fighters exactly like getting hit in the ribs. Leonard also had much more punching power than Floyd and had to get past a vulture-like wingspan of a jab to get at his body. Floyd is a good bodypuncher, I understand this. This is part of why I believe Judah stopped fighting, was because Floyd was getting to his body.

I've not seen Floyd dominated, but I have seen far lesser fighters than Tommy give him a tough fight. I have seen weaknesses that I believe certain fighters can exploit. Like for instance, Oscar clearly had success when he was jabbing. Now picture Hearns at 6'1", with that massive reach, along with the amazing speed and power he brought to the table AND with Floyd being a couple of divisions above his best weight.

    Doesn't bode well for PBF.

His inability to get hit flush ... his switching various angles ... the way he pivots on the move ... him throwing punches at different angles ... his southpaw jab ... his ability (one of the best by a southpaw) to avoid the right hand.

At the top of Sweet Pea's game ... he was impossible to hit ... he was very crafty ... very slick ... very discipline with his punches ...

Whitaker was in great shape and didn't expect to knock everyone out ... he was satisfied with the decision ... I think Pea wouldve been able to go 15 rounds and make it a great fight.

Hearns ... has never seen a style like Whitaker's ... the new Generation of boxers have more dimensions that boxers of old. Whitaker came in when the game was transending to the new era of boxing. Guys were less relentless and more quick thinking in the ring ... Whitaker's ability to adjust and to recognize his opponents weaknesses were far superior than Hearns.

Hearns has the ability to overwhelm his opponents with power and boxing ability, but Pea's game was alot different ... he was a quick thinking boxer ... who's mindset was confusing his opponents with angles and quick pivots.

No excuses for Hearns ... he had endurance issues and couldn't last against a guy with better stamina than him ... he was quick to wear himself out early in fights ... Hagler, SRL II, and Barkely ...

Hearns wasn't great with cutting off the ring ... a fighter who can use the ring effectively ... can find a way to beat Hearns.

    Do you not like Hearns?

You pick two former lightweights, who are at a big style and size disadvantage, to beat him.

So if he was impossible to hit how would Floyd KO him as you claimed in another thread?

What you're saying in these posts is that Whitaker had all of the things that Wilfred Benitez had basically(other than size). So it's pretty obvious Benitez would've beaten Hearns as well. Oh wait....

Yeah, he has, and a naturally bigger fighter with a similar style as well.

This is too ridiculous to respond properly to.

So you think Buddy McGirt(who won possibly 5 rounds off Whitaker) was better than Hearns?

Yes, obviously guys like Floyd and Whitaker possess the same physical assets that these guys do.

    Such as Benitez or Leonard?

Most of the punches Castillo landed was smothered busy body work. He did not land any real clean precise punches but a few left hooks that were partially slipped. Same way Calzaghe beat Hopkins in every punch category but barely anything did any damage.

It's not that he doesn't like him, it's that he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. I really hope fitzgeraldz turns out to be another troll like that southpaw character, or at least pretends to be so we don't have to hear any more of his nonsense.
