Leonard didn't beat Hagler ... Vinny Paez was at his best at LW but managed to make it up to SMW ... thats all i'm saying ... No i'm not a hater ... Hagler in my mind is one of the best MW's I ever seen. The title defenses ... the undisputed championship ... the lineal title ... dominating a division and preventing alot of quality guys of gaining a championship.
In predicting a fight you can't factor in physical attributes ... you have to take it for what it is from a boxing stand point. Boxing ability trumps all physical disadvantages ... This is the sweet science ... not the bigger, faster, stronger guy wins ...
Uhmm...Good big fighter beats small great fighter sometimes. GREAT bigger fighter beats smaller great fighter the vast majority of the time.
Ali v Foreman Mayweather v Hernandez Mayweather v DLH Mayweather v Corrales Quintana v Williams Frazier v Ali Cotto v Gomez Brewster v Klitschko Klitschko v Sanders V. Klitschko v Lewis Byrd v Golata Tyson v Golata Johnson v Tarver Casamayor v Corrales Pineda v Trinidad Braithwaite v Mormeck Chagaev v Valuev All guys that won these fights weren't the tallest ... weren't the biggest ... weren't the fastest ... weren't the strongest ... Physical attributes don't matter ... boxing skills ... ring intellegence ... and quick thinking and adjustment make a difference.
:thinkI see where you are coming from but my original intent was to say that a smaller fighter moving up in weight ala Mayweather-Hagler fantasy matchups, would fare poorly most of the time when facing an ATG in his natural weight class and most physical attributes being even.
You have a point. Because of the quick adjustments and ring generalship, I really think Floyd could grab the WBC belt at heavyweight off of Samuel Peter. Maybe he could beat Klitschko too, since Floyd has the ability to negate his jab and as you pointed out, physical attributes don't matter.
Physical attributes DO matter. Yes, they do. Not as much as boxing skills, intelligence, ring generalship, experience, etc., but they definitely make a difference. Speed, power, stamina are very important. Let's say Floyd Mayweather fights Sam Peter (ridiculous match, I know). Mayweather might win all of the early rounds, because of his craft. But he'll be worn down by the eighth round from running away, thus his stamina will be shot, in response to Sam Peter's strength and Heavyweight stamina. Sam Peter would win later in the fight.
I actually went thru and read this entire thread and can't ****ing believe people believe Floyd can beat Hearns at welterweight. utterly ridiculous. Hearns was a beast at 147.
:huh Is this a joke?-"you cant factor in physical attributes?" Lets try this again.Height, reach, power etc dont GUARANTEE victory, but are often factors in a fighter winning;Or has a fighter never won because he's bigger, faster, stronger etc?:nut You said they mean nothing. Will you concede that statement is wrong? I doubt it.:verysad
Oh yeah ... good point ... that is true in most cases ... but fighters who don't soley depend on their physical attributes usually pull off the upset.
Only when making a prediction ... using logic ... gives you the mindset that maybe physical attributes play a factor ... but if that were the case then fighters like Leonard ... Hearns ... Mayweather ... Duran ... Benitez ... Cotto ... DLH ... Trinidad ... Hopkins ... Calzaghe ... Jones ... Toney ... Spinks ... Whitaker ... ect ... ect ... Those guys wouldn't have been able to last and go as far as they've got.
