I've ben reading a bit about him and studying the films I can find .. putting aside the obvious, that in a long career he supposedly never fought a black fighter, his style and career is quite impressive .. you rarely hear him rated when top light heavyweights are mentioned anymore ... where does he rate ?
I can't see how he could be left out of a top ten at175lbs,having said that, from what I have seen of him,[not a great deal,] he isn't my type of fighter.
Definitely forgotten. He's highly rated by those that have researched him. https://www.si.com/vault/1979/04/23...rget-a-fight-but-not-his-workout-with-dempsey For your reading pleasure, if you haven't seen it.
Very good read… though I strongly suspect, that the beating he handed out to Dempsey, may possibly have been slightly less severe, than how Tommy rembered it!
@SolomonDeedes found this which tells it somewhat differently. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045462/1926-09-12/ed-1/seq-80/
Thanks for posting that. Yes, a slightly different story than Loughran's. Sounds more like 2 even rounds of serious sparring - where neither pulled any punches.
Thanks .. I"m actually familiar w that article ... always been fascinated w his description of Dempsey.
I don't think he's forgotten among this board. A top 10 LHW fairly easily. And to think... Greb beat him 3 (?) times.
It is pretty astonishing when you think that Loughran beat Walker, Braddock, Godoy, Sharkey , Uzcuden, Baer, Carpentier and gave Tunney a very close fight at a very young age. That said he was only 21 when fighting Greg too ... Loughran was clearly an amazing fighter.
