How does boxing legend and 4x Ring Magazine Top 10 Heavyweight Tommy Loughran fare against the following men in their respective primes? Tony Tubbs Michael Dokes Andrew Golota Michael Grant Oleg Maskaev
Good thread. These are some pretty good big guys, but Loughran was a G His footwork, reflexes and boxing IQ were so good. Here is 2 minutes of Loughran vs Carnera, which I think serves as a good reference here This content is protected
Tubbs and Dokes out-specimen him. Too much speed and skill combined with size and strength. Caveat being that Tony and Mike weren't too deep into the booger sugar. The other three apply their power. and unless Tommy could earn their respect with his power, they find a home enough for a stoppage.
Loughran had skills but I don't really see Carnera as a good stand-in for any of the guys on the list.
Loughran was a superlative fighter...a master. The only deficits against him were huge size disparities. I'd much rather consider him vs men in his own weight division. It's great that Loughran fought Carnera...the only reason Primo won was because of the unbelievable advantages he had in size. Some of those modern heavies would have won only because of their inherent size advantages...nothing more.
Loughran might beat them all, especially if he gets proper preparation time. This is a guy who took on all comers at a rate of 7 fights a year for 17 years. In addition to pestering Primo to a decision loss near the end of his long career. Loughran beat Max Bear, Paulino Uzucudun, Earnie Schaaf, Arturo Godoy, King Levinsky, Ray Impelletiere, and Jack Sharkey.
This was an old Tommy. Loughran at his best ....they don't come greater in terms of boxing skill. My dad visited Loughran training camps in Pennsylvania many times back in the late 20's, early 30's. He always told me he was the best pure boxer he ever saw. Of the fighters mentioned only Dokes at his best was a top rater. Loughran wins 4/5 against these predominant second tier hwts.
He also lost to Godoy,Hamas x2,Riskox2,Schaaf x2 Levinsky,Poreda, and was stopped by Sharkey. Loughran was a great light heavyweight with a fine jab but lacked power .To say he took on all comers is not strictly true either since he never fought a black fighter.
Some perspective is required here. Loughran was a great light heavyweight, who had some success against big heavyweights, but was beaten by the best superheavyweight of his day. Chris Byrd obviously did much better against Vitally Klitschko, then went on to fight at light heavyweight. It is hard to see what answer would significantly advance your cause here? If he loses to them all, then I could argue that the big heavyweights of his era did just as well. If he beats some of them, then the idea of the modern superheavyweight takes a serious hit!
At the very least, I doubt that the size of those guys would be a determining factor. Can anyone here confirm if Loughran agreed to only be awarded a win if he could stop Carnera and/or whether or not that is true?
