I don't believe anyone at lightheavy..ever could exceed Loughran at his specialty of defensive boxing...Loughran's great "resume", ring generalship via the 15 round distance, which he was so adept at navigating, he would have beaten the far less proven Dawson, over 15 rounds by decision (of course)...and all this from a fan of Dawson. I think Chad is the only guy at the top of the lightheavy division, but no way would he have beaten Tommy Loughran.
Similar styles, Dawson is much quicker and rangier with more snap in his shots so I'll pick him to take a decision despite the fact hes relatively unproven
Loughran's one of the best for footwork i've ever seen, he's just a matador in the ring. This would be a boxing match so it's very interesting, as Dawson is very good in them type of fights, he's a skilled boxer with fast hands and good combos whilst using good footwork. I'd love to see a fight like this. Loughran was great against onrushing guys, he just wasn't there for there punches, and he established the jab as well as anyone ever has. Dawson has been given a bit of trouble with the aggressive types thus far and at this moment in time cannot be called a master boxer, more a skilled technician. Loughran was a master boxer by trade. It's just very interesting imo, it's all about- can Dawson mix it up with variety to prevent Loughran's rythm from setting the pace, and can Loughran offset Dawson's mobility and handspeed with his great ring generalship? I'll obviously take Loughran, he's more proven in immense proportions.
Although Loughran has an 'old timers style' Dawson just doesn't impress me whatsoever. Feather-fisted, hasn't beaten anyone of REAL note, whereas Loughran handled much bigger (but probably far less skilled than Dawson) men; Dawson is without a doubt fast, has fairly decent punching form, but takes time off in rounds. Loughran's movement, jab+hold technique and fantastic punch resistance see him through to a decision.
