Guy had a lot of heart. He had the **** beaten out of him by Purrity, face beaten to a pulp and knocked down twice... Still went 10 rounds and made a draw of the fight. Against Hipp, he broke his ****ing hand AND his jaw. Morrison still hung in there and knocked him out in the 9th round.
But what a left hook! It's hard to tell how much of that power came from the steroids the guy admitted to doing in his boxing career, but man, that guy could crumble buildings with his power! I find it funny how many people leave Morrison off of any all-time great punching power debates. Unless they are handicapping for the drug use as I would understand!
Tough dude fought everyone one punch power I felt he was given a bad wrap while he was active in the 90's underated to be sure
He was one tough hombre as they say. His combination of excellent one punch power and sometimes not so sturdy chin made him exciting as hell! The Duke is missed now for sure! Too bad he's not around now. He would would be one rich son of a gun and the HW division could use the excitement.
His skills were very, very underrated. Watch the first three rounds of the Mercer fight, and you'll see a one-sided beating in favor of Morrison. Problem is, he had no way to harness that nervous energy and reel himself in, so he shot his wad in tough fights after a few rounds. It wasn't a skill issue, all that was in place. He just couldn't pace himself. And yes, his chin was pretty poor.
Morrison did take some pretty solid shots from Foreman. He intelligently engineered one of the only two clear cut wins over Big George during his second career (along with a peak Holyfield). He also came off the deck to take out Ruddock and The Truth. He recovered from some devastating losses and setbacks. His record is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. I just hope he doesn't wind up like Bob Hazelton, due to steroid use.
Even though it's not one of his most exciting fights (although it has its moments) I think he deserves particular praise for fighting in such an alien manner to him and succeeding against Foreman in '93. What was supposed to be a Foreman-Lyle style slugfest that had several major boxing mags decrying the peril Morrison would being put into, instead he boxed clever and got himself that WBO belt.
Tommy Morrison was a decent fighter. Odds are you were at least fairly good if you have a win over him on your resume. His offense, in the first 3 rounds especially, is top 10 all time at heavyweight. His recent racist remarks, homophobic remarks, and steroid use make it real hard for me to remember him unless someone else brings him up. I try not to concentrate on people like him. I hope he changes in the future. Until then, I say **** Tommy Morrison regardless of his chin.
He said he never really liked black people. He says he isn't HIV positive, because he has only had sex with women. That AIDS is a gay plague sent by god to punish homosexuals, and does not affect heterosexuals. He says for these reasons it is impossible for him to test positive for HIV.
He sounds delusional and like a jerk! But he was an exciting fighter. Morrison had very good skills - great jab, head movement, and combination punching - and he could take almost anybody out that he hit cleanly. But that chin of his would always be a liability. AGainst certain fighters he'd look devastating. But against guys like Mercer and probably guys like Tua, McCall and Tyson, he'd get brutalized rather quickly! If Mercer didn't have such a granite chin he would have been blown out. Morrison looked like the best heavyweight on the planet for the first three rounds against Mercer. And, I always thought that the comebacking Larry Holmes would have had a much tougher time against Morrison than he did against Mercer; at least for the first 3-4 rounds!
