Cooney nails Tommy with that killer left hook and puts him down, just seconds in to the first round. Tommy gets a count then goes in like a Kamikaze, but Cooney s ready and drills the Duke. The ref has seen enough and calls it off. Cooney by ko in just over 2 mins.
Wow! This is a rare fight, one where I'd bet on it not getting out of the 1st round. I lean towards Cooney because of his height and reach but would I be confident? NO!
I'd make Cooney the slight favourite I think he has a slightly better chin and has the extra height and reach. But honestly both fighters have amazing left hooks that anything could happen depending on who lands their left hook first.
Best version vs. Best version, I would go with Tommy Morrison. If we are talking about random points in their careers, Gerry Cooney probably wins most times.
Two big punchers. Neither with great chins. Both started out fast and did their best work in the early rounds. Both had lethal left hooks. So who wins? Maybe the guy who gets off a flurry first ?
I did watch Morrison survive some damage vs Ruddock to score a knockout, for what it’s worth. It’s a 50-50 fight. Like two gunslingers, each just one shot away from comprehensive victory or total annihilation.
I’ll take Cooney but without much confidence, giving him the edge because I figure he’d land that left hook to the body and that would take a lot out of a stamina-challenged Morrison and make him vulnerable.
I’ll tell you what…last night I watched Morrison’s fight with Mercer. Good Lord, could Morrison crack. He repeatedly landed this sickening uppercut-hook combo which Mercer had only one answer for - his teak chin. Not that Cooney was any less deadly. I’ll tentatively go Morrison in two.
