Style wise and hth maybe he beats even a prime Cooney.. But HTH vs other opponents no way... Cant see Prime Cooney going life and death with Alex Stewart,Lou Savarese .. He also kos Moorer early (who was dominating Foreman).. And cant see him losing to Morrison... Also cant see Cooney going life and death with Joe Hipp, struggling with Yuri Vaulin, drawing with Purritty or getting blasted by Michael Bennt. Also contrary to what many think Cooney held his own with a Prime Larry Holmes,, Cant see Old George or Tommy Morrison doing that.... Foreman would be shut out and possibly stopped late (swelling) and Morrison wouldnt make it pass the mid rounds vs Holmes.
The latter -- tap-hook to the head and rib-breaker to the body. I knew Randall Yonker back in the day and he learned the same combo from Valle -- it took Yonker from club fighter to fringe contender. Don't know if Ward learned it from Valle or from someone who learned it from Valle or whatever, but it's the same combo. Cooney also had that balls-nasty half-hook/half-uppercut with the left. He threw the longer, looping uppercut sometimes, but that short hybrid one was the sneaky bust-you-up punch that was very effective at mid-range.
Tier higher for punching a downed Norton , stopping Jimmy Young on cuts and then an ancient Ron Lyle (15 years older than himself and considerably smaller) while Morrison stopped Donovan Ruddock , Pinklon Thomas , Carl Williams , Joe Hipp (double TKO really) , James Tillis , David Jaco as dead as they were when they fought him ? and then he also outpointed the corpse of George Foreman (which still gets more respect than it deserves) and lasted 10 with Ross Puritty . Morison is more than just 1 tier higher but the size advantage for Cooney makes it hard to predict.
I think Morrison has as good a chance as Cooney, certainly post-Holmes. I guess a better question might be if Morrison could do what Holmes did in somehow "exposing" the unbeaten Cooney. And I think Cooney is being a bit over-rated here.
Good match up. I'm 50/50 here. Although Morrison,in the Foreman fight, shown us that he could adapt. Cooney never did,as far as I can remember.
Cooney.. I think Morrison may actually carry a bigger punch in regards to one punch power, and may even be a little more technically sound, but........ Cooney is the bigger man, he is rougher and tougher then Morrison he has the better chin of the two and based on the pace of the fight, that is if it goes as I see it Cooney would be the stronger fighter down the stretch.. I see Cooney knocking Tommy out in the 6th round of a great shoot out of a fight..
Tommy's speed and ability to recover if hurt (as he did against Ruddock and Carl Williams) is the difference here. Gerry tried to utilize movement against Foreman, and lasted less than five minutes. Morrison was able to succeed where Cooney failed in taking the decision from Big George. Neither could stand up to the other's best shot, but Tommy did absorb some bombs from Foreman. "Never hook with a hooker" favors Morrison over Cooney, I think. If Ruddock couldn't do it, I don't believe the slower Gerry would either. Tommy's superior speed gets his hook there first.
Yeah that Ruddock was far from the actual good Ruddock as I am sure you already know... I was seeing this fight as the Prime Cooney, not the one who was destroyed by Foreman... Morrison I saw hurt on so many occasions by such average punches.. Go back and watch that knock down against a shot Carl Williams, its a right hand that is thrown about as hard as a jab.. I don't think he could hold up to Cooney's power to the body and head...
Cooney had the habit of bending down to his opponents, especially when he loaded up on the hook. I dont think the height diff would really matter. I think Morrison's hook is a bit faster and would get inside and in between Cooney's punches but who the hell knows when you have two monster hitters with limited punch resistance.
