I still like Cooney here, but there is one thing that makes me wonder: Gerry could fight, but he couldn't really fight back. That is to say, you rarely seen Cooney in exchanges where both men are punching -- once his opponent takes the offense, Cooney waits for the other fellow to stop punching, then re-sets and starts his attack over. Holmes, and others later, took advantage of his inability to exchange. Morrison, on the other hand, was always willing to trade. So I could see him getting through and winning if he was able to lure Cooney into some exchanges, and then press his advantage when Gerry wasn't punching back.
Good point. If Morrison could get Cooney to trade with him Tommy could get there first as his hands were faster. This could all boil down to who tags who first. 2 guys with crunching power and mediocre chins....would be interesting.

Yep, a fatal flaw with Gerry. The caveat here is that was always a time he'd unload that brutal left uppercut of his instead of retreating. Those times when he'd stand his ground, that was a brutal shot and the Morrison defense is not good enough to avoid getting hit. And if he catches Tommy with that left uppercut, it'll be all over. The other consideration is that Cooney hardly fought tall and had zero head movement. He leaned into punches. If Morrison throws that sizzling left hook of his early, 1 of them is going to connect. You know where Cooney's jaw is going to be. And I don't see Cooney absorbing that shot or those follow up combos. But like you said, that waiting for a guy to finish his flurry thing is what killed him in that Spinks fight. He loses all effectiveness backing up and during this little "time out" period. If Morrison is winging shots early in the first round, he could catch him. A very interesting bout and a blowout loss for one of these guys. I think Morrison had the better corner though and that tips the scales to like 52-48 for me. It's certainly a fight were you can picture both guys hands being raised and picture both guys getting some smelling salts revival time on the mat. Who doesn't love these heavyweight slugfests?
