Did you ever see the Foreman Morrison fight? Tommy fought very atypically in that match, and frankly I don't think he'd abandone his usual style against a much smaller, lesser hitting fighter like Quarry, whom I doubt he'd view as much of a threat...
To say Morrisson had a glass jaw is laughable. But Quarry would of won the fight in the middle rounds. IMO
Think I'll have to agree with you here, which is usually the case.Quarry had a very good chin ,and feasted on big punchers ,but Morrison was pretty fast at getting his shots off ,it would be interesting before Tommy starts to slow down,he liked the ladies a bit too much and it affected his stamina, but, there are worse ways to dissipate!
Morrison had a pretty crap chin, pretty much every time he fought someone good he was dropped except Foreman where he didn't fight like Tommy Morrison. He was knocked out by Mercer, BENTT, and Lewis brutally (hard to fault him alot for Lennox though) was dropped twice and nearly finished by Carl Williams, and was dropped twice by Ross The Boss Purrity. His fight with a shot Ruddock involved him getting dropped as well, pretty much every time he fought someone that could punch he was dropped/badly hurt.
He was kicking Ray Mercers ass before he got tangled in the ropes and the ref didn't step in and allowed Mercer to hit Morrisson with his arms in tangled in the ropes. Being dropped by big punchers does not make a glass jaw. Ali was dropped, Foreman was dropped, Tyson was dropped, Lewis was dropped, Louis was dropped, Bowe was dropped. Are all of these fighters glass jawed?
I don't think his chin was made of iron either. He was nearly KO'd by a totally shot Carl Williams, who was never really a puncher to begin with. He had his jaw broken by Joe Hipp, and was beaten in a single round by a 10 fight novice in Michael Bent. Ross Purity had a good punch, but was an 8-8 journeyman and managed to floor Tommy twice. Mercer was a good right hander, but both Bert Cooper and Kimual Odum managed to survive him for 12 grueling rounds, while Morrison lost to him in 5.
For me i would say quarry, his tenacity plus his more refined teqnique would wear down the duke, and the crescendo, would come by the 7th round.
A little off topic but Forman openly confessed to avoiding Quarry his whole career-it could have gone the distance but highly unlikely imo. BTW Morrison's jaw was just fine he lasted longer than most against a prime Lennox Lewis and in an another era Morrison would have been considered a great at 48-3 and 42 Ko's.
Having your jaw smashed and continuing to fight is a sign of a glass chin? Man, **** that Sonny Liston guy.
This one is in Inglewood, CA. Quarry butchers him and it ends in the 9th. Morrison goes down twice, once for a 9 count and the second time he makes no attempt to get up. Morrison is cut from the 4th on; Jerry puts on a clinic.
exactly. Drives me nuts when people say that. Not to mention he beat Cleveland Williams after having suffered a broken nose in round 1.
Goodness Quarry was not slow, hand speed anyway "lightning left hook' and he could get up on his toes and box with the best of them , when need be, he had a way of not only beating a puncher, yet completely dismantling one, Big Mathis (29-1), Foster (24-0), Lyle ( 19-0) and Shavers (45-2). hardly won a round combined Overall I believe Jerry had the Best miles for gallon, although he cut worse Tommy, Jerry cut worse than everybody but Cooper and Wepner.
Quarry and Morrison are really very similar. I think Quarry was overall the better fighter except that he was less aggressive and cut easily. While it is very possible that Morrison could win a TKO on cuts, I don't give him much of a chance otherwise.
