That's equally dismissable. In the first encounter Liston was in his 8th pro fight and there is a big backstory to this fight (if one digs deep enough) as well not to mention a broken jaw for Liston. 7 months later Liston bounced him up and down like a yoyo before ending him and a year later beat him 9 rounds to zip in cruise mode. From what i can gather the knockdown was in their second fight and was for a flash one count. Here's what Marshall said - "Im sorry to this day about knocking him down. Man, Am I sorry. He hit me after that like-nobody should be hit like that. I think about it now and I hurt. He came out after me in the fifth round. He hit me with a right hand on my ear. It didnt knock me out, and it didnt knock me down, but it hurt so much I just had to go down anyway. The next round he knocked me down 3 times. He hit me in the stomach with a left hand in the sixth. That wasnt a knockdown either. It couldnt be. I was paralysed. I just couldnt move, I couldnt move enough to fall down. that was it."- Marty Marshall
Great post! You really made me reconsider my first thoughts about this match-up. Tommy is underrated big time.
Yeah it's debatable. I've never seen actual proof one way or another. Did get a whisper it was a flash 1 second job.
Liston was always prepared to give ground and regroup. Sonny was a decent boxer and had every tool except the ability to cut off the ring, against Morrison he would not have to .I see a Cleveland Williams type of shoot out with the better boxer and better chin winning.Tommy would have his moments because he had very quick hands, and Gil Clancy picked Morrison to beat old George because of his hand speed .If Tommy boxed on the retreat as he did against George he loses ,because he would be on the end of that telephone pole jab.If he comes in he gets blasted because he didn't have the chin to take Sonny's shots and while he could wobble Sonny with his left I think a prime Liston absorbs his shots and prevails inside 4 rounds.
There's no scenario in which Tommy wins this. Liston by KO inside 3 rounds (and that feels generous to Morrison).
The Ugly Bear's claim to fame is ko'ing a glass chinned Lightheavy twice.....getting wobbled before winning against the Tomato cans of all Tomato cans Williams......and flat out quitting twice against a green Clay. Over the span of both careers Morrison fought bigger fighters, no doubt and i dont think he would be concerned with Sonnys, according to the forum experts "Godly strengths". Chin, well, Morrisons chin was not granite but he took some big shots or beatings from big man and kept coming/winning in all but three fights, Loosing to Lemmie is no shame, Mercer, ok , like a Wk/Brewster moment but Mercer ate some viscous leather until the KO and against Bent he fought absolutely stupid and the three knock down rule did him in. Sonny got ko'ed twice, once lights out aka sniffing salt, Morrison three times against far bigger opponents so I am not sure how good the ugly Bears chin really is. Forum folklore dont count. Liston is not particular fast or some defense genius, he can be hit with not too much difficulty. Morrison's speed will allow him to , at least in the beginning of the fight, to beat Liston to the punch and he is going to land some big left hooks, the question is, is Liston gonna take it or is he looking for the exit. On paper, Sonny should win but IMO he is the most hysterically over rated Heavy on this forum , Morrison will be no walk over and will be a stern test for Sonny, a test he might loose. And please spare me the Big cat praise, Morrisons resume , skills and ultimate accomplishments are in another zipcode all together in comparison............they might compare in power but thats about it.
What a complete sh*t post above .. He cleaned out the division, was avoided, and lost to Ali 5 years past his prime.. No one thought Liston was going to make such short work of Patterson twice..
Morrison fought in real boxing where people had real power and strength. Liston fought in black and white times where bones were made of paper machete. Morrison KO 1
