Morrison wouldn't have the stamina or Chin to put up a long-term fight, Liston would get him in deep water early and crush him...
I would make Sonny Liston the favorite to win this matchup over Tommy Morrison. BUT, what do I know? I did not think Tommy would beat old George Foreman either.
I am not claiming Tommy wins this, but lets take a breath. Morrison was a top ten fighter in maybe the second best era for heavyweights. He fought a rogues gallery, winning and losing and always turned up to fight. He would be much bigger, much quicker, much more powerful and much more athletic than anyone Sonny fought. If the question is 'can' Tommy win, well, yes, I guess he could win..if the question is 'would' he? I reckon a fighter like Sonny is too much for the Duke regardless of the above. It could be an entertaining gunfight for maybe five rounds but as Tommy tires, Sonny gathers himself, settles into 'his' fight and methodically breaks Tommy down, brutally stopping him late in a fight people talk about in hushed tones for many years. Tommy and Sonny are two of my favourite fighters, and two that history has been unkind to in my opinion. Sonny is different gravy but either man on their night would give a headache a headache. Oh, and I'm gonna set my cat amongst your pigeons here but Morrison would be Liston's best win. By a margin. There, I've said it...
Morrison was dangerous early — no question. He had legit left-hook power, good hand speed in bursts, and could hurt almost anybody if he caught them clean in the first couple rounds. But against Liston? That’s a nightmare matchup for Tommy. Liston’s jab alone would dictate the fight. He had one of the most powerful, punishing jabs in heavyweight history, and Morrison never showed he could consistently get past a long, heavy jab without taking damage. Once Sonny found his range, Morrison would be forced into exchanges where Liston’s strength, reach, and ability to fight mean inside would break him down. Tommy’s chin and stamina were always the question marks — and Liston had the kind of heavy, thudding shots that sap you quick. Even if Morrison landed something early, Liston was an incredibly composed fighter who could take a shot, reset, and keep pressing. I see Morrison starting fast, maybe getting Liston’s attention in the first, but by the middle rounds, the jab and body work have him gassing. Sonny walks him down, batters him inside, and stops him somewhere between 4 and 6.
Yep, already did say that myself. I personally think that Morrison's two best wins, Old Foreman and Razor Ruddock, not only give Liston everything he could handle but also have a healthy chance of winning too.
Riddle me this , who of the two is bigger, stronger , faster, has better combinations and wont stay down? Liston is outmatched, face the music, the Duke is better in almost every category. Morrison , KO 4.
