how good was he really????? if he wouldnt have contracted HIV, would he have went alot further in his career????? discuss
He was a banger who couldn't fight going backwards and his in-fight adjustments were the equivalent of an origami specialist, fold fold fold when he was truly tested. I remember people saying he was the "white Mike Tyson" and in hindsight I get a good laugh thinking about it. He had already flunked the test pre HIV. Love the guy's heart and dedication, I really feel bad for him, but damn was that dude over rated at the time. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTrHeFwu-mI&feature=related[/ame] 8:00 mark
Okay boxer, big left hook, very marketable, no chin...His fighting days as a top tier HW were long gone before the HIV...
He folded up????? No chin????? have any of you seen his war with Razor Ruddock????? one of the biggest punchers in the HW division at the time
He did have the tendency to fold on the biggest stages of his career. See Ray Mercer and Lennox Lewis fights. He had his moments too.
Put it this way, I wish we had a Tommy Morrison in todays HW division. He was kinda like David Haye but with bollocks.
When he fought to protect his chin, he was pretty good. Not a top tier (Lewis, Holyfield etc) type fighter of the day, but certainly belonged in the ranks of fighters just below that. Think your Mercers, Ruddocks, etc. Did at times fight with "hit me" written on his chin, which wasn't smart.
The Mercer vs Morrison fight showed that happens when you put a green kid just 22 months in the pros in with a 30 year old, top amateur, that was fighting 12 rounders.....
He was a very entertaining fighter but was shot by the time the HIV deal came along. He will always be remembered for great KOs (for and against) and for having the best mullet in the sport.
