What was the popular opinion about him when he was a YOUNG green guy undefeated early in his career? A new white hope ?
A Burial Bill Cayton heavyweight was what I thought anyway. Those guys are murder against the grade c heavies. But you can't base your judgement on just those results--but Burial Bill sure had the tv contracts and knew how to supply the media with ko footage, didn't he? The real big problem w/ Tommy was all those surgeries.
Before he lost to Mercer there were quite a few who thought he'd beat some of the other rising prospects-contenders at the time.. I and several other people I knew favored him to beat Mercer.. We were wrong.
He was a dynamic puncher on the way up with good speed and an all time left hook. I felt Morrison was badly exposed in a win over Yuri Vaulin. The fight took place on the undercard of Holyfield and Foreman. Morrison was stunned by the light hitting Vaulin and appeared to have low stamina. It was on that night that I felt he'd have a puncher's chance vs anyone, but was more likely the to be the next Ernie Shavers. If Tommy was in his prime today, I think he would be one of the champions as the division is in transition with the top talent not fighting each other.
Most thought he was a hypejob even before the Mercer fight but there hadn't been a white heavy of note since ****ey who absolutely fizzled out.
Tommy's bum ass would not be a champion today. He'd get knocked across the board by the four champs (counting Ortiz).
I agree about the part where some people were psyched about having another great white hope. Not sure I remember too many people thinking he was a hype job before the Mercer loss. Granted his opposition was abysmal, but he looked pretty destructive in just about every one of his fights. His early bout against Lorenzo Canady was the only one where I though he looked lackluster. But at only 21 years old he was fighting actively and taking every journeyman they put in front of him apart... I really thought he had a good chance of beating the older, less active Mercer, but again I was wrong.
Overhyped but one of the most formidable up-and-coming heavyweights in a historically stacked division. Crude but improving skills and enough power in his left hook to stop anyone.
If Arreola, who doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Tommy, can nearly get Stiv out of there, "The Duke" would flatline him.
If you had told someone around 1990 that if Bert Cooper could make Ray Mercer's head swell up like a basketball, then "The Duke" could flatten him, they might have believed you..
I never said he had no chance. I said " I can see him losing to someone like Bermane Stiverne." certainly with a lot less conviction than your statement about the duke "flattening " him.
Stiverne also is the only guy to put Arreola out. And Stiverne also ate one million bombs from Wilder with little issue. Think about that.
