It was a cut stoppage and happened when he was a prospect.. Morrison got stopped in his 38th fight and while prime in one round by Bentt.. He was likewise prime when he got decked twice enroute to a draw by 8-8 Ross purity in a fivht he might have lost.. He broke his jaw against Joe Hipp in a match he was lucky to win... Decked twice by a 33 year old Unranked Carl Williams... I can go on and on and on and on....
I always thought he was a better earlier in his career before Rocky V before he added the extra muscle, had a nice left hook though.
Awesome post :thumbsup Wlad beat Ibragimov, who beat Briggs, who beat Foreman Wlad beat Mercer, who beat Morrison, who beat Foreman As you say, quality, and all that :hi:
My mistake. When I saw Stiverne fight Areola for the first time I thought the commentators referenced that fight and referred to it as being a cut stoppage. I was wrong.. But I've also been corrected by the guy who claimed Douglas was stopped by a "left" hand from Holyfield.
Beating Foreman is greater than anything Wlad ever done. Quality always trumps quantity . Dino isn't very bright, nor does he know much about boxing. If there were golf, his handicap would be pushing three digits.
That as some rebuilding job they did with Tommy & a lot of dedication on his part to come back from that brutal ko to Mercer. Most heavies suffering brutal ko losses have a career like Tate did > the Weaver bout. So very few are able to come back with any kind of effectiveness after getting starched like that. But he did get fans to his fights and he did get others than the die hard boxing fans to follow him. We need more of those kinds of guys and they help the sport just by doing that & having exciting fights.
The only thing that prevented it was resilence - Mercer had an inhuman chin, and Tommy had a below average chin. He was beating the **** out of Mercer in the early rounds.
Good, come from behind wins over Hipp and a washed Truth Williams. Most telling was his relatively easy victory over Old Foreman, kinda showing how limited Foreman was in his comeback. I liked Morrison. He was as exciting as anyone who stepped between those ropes. I thought he would destroy Mercer. Excellent power and a tremendous left hook. Would've loved to see him trade with Tyson.
My recollection from the time was that he was thought to be interesting due to his pigmentation, his supposed relationship to John Wayne, and his knockouts of inferior competition, and thus was put on TV a lot because he could pull in viewers. Real boxing fans were taking more of a wait and see approach. I don't recall the expectations on Tommy as being the same as on Duane Bobick or Gerry ****ey. More "Let's see where this goes." Rid**** Bowe and Ray Mercer were the prospects people had their eyes on. In some ways Tommy really exceeded expectations by becoming a legit top-5 contender in 93-94 & upsetting Foreman with a very disciplined performance.
