I'll tell ya one thing Tommy who was a boxing child star in Oklahoma, had some crowd pleasing matches, Carl the Truth Williams, Joe Hipp, Ray Mercer, George Foreman, Razor Ruddock. tHESE MATCHES WIN OR LOSE HAD THE CROWD ON THEIR FEET!
Drawing power cannot be emphasized enough. If a fighter can put bums in seats, he's hot property. Casinos want you, promoters want you, the TV networks want you. Morrison was very hot for a while, and the reasons don't matter. He had the look and the hook that people wanted to see. He was on quite a number of boxing magazine covers, probably more than his ability warranted, but still. People wanted to see him fight, which in itself is success.
Besides Povetkin what wins over top contenders have the others had? And Wilder refusing 100 mil to unify against AJ was a low point, but at least he got his clock cleaned by Fury and an unification seems to be coming. In the 90's you had Bowe dropping his WBC belt in a trashcan and Tyson dropping the very same belt also for not facing Lewis. Instead they faced ancient Dokes and Bruce Seldon respectively. Then you also had the travesty that was Foreman's reign, where someone like Schultz was actually ducked.
Tommy had some talent but never was that serious a contender. His flaws reared up everytime he stepped up.
