Slick-punching Japanese speedster Tomonobu Shimizu (19-3-1, 9 KOs), 115, captured the WBA super-flyweight belt as he utilized his faster footwork and longer reach to dominate early and late rounds, though losing middle rounds, to eke out a split but popular decision (115-113 twice and 114-115) over defending champ Hugo Cazares (35-7-2, 25 KOs), 115, a switch-hitting Mexican, over twelve hard-fought and gory sessions on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan.

Daisuke Naito and Wonjongkam are two of the guys that beat him and stopped him.
After 11 fights he got a shot at 64-2 Wonjongkam. Talk about cherry picking.

Getting a split decision in your own country vs a foreigner always sounds suspect.

The round by round yesterday was inconclusive because they didn't show all the rounds (tape delay), wich is pretty suspect indeed with a hometown split decision :yep

Japan is probably as fair as it gets for away judging. Lots of times i see close matches go to the foreigner in japan.

Agreed, but Kameda (Koki) also won an UD on that same card that De la Mora should have edged.

War Japan! That's a major shocker, one of the biggest upsets this year although I have to check it out because I read it was very close.
