Sorry if this has been dicussed but I was wondering what people thought of James Toney vs Joe Calzaghe at supper middle. My gut is to go with Toney. Both had incredible hand speed but Toney's defense until the Jones fight was amazing and his punches were crisper. However, Calzaghe is incredibly unorthodox and his southpaw style could give him trouble. thoughts?

toney by decision...i think a focused JT at 168 was almost unbeatable

i agree. the jones fight tarnishes his legacy at that weight. jones was quick as **** and toney on most nights would have given him hell. toney by UD

What a dream fight. This is a war! I think that Toney gives Calzaghe fits with his defensive skills, but Joe is the busier. Toney lands the cleaner punches to take the UD.

um if anybody noticed what beats toney is finesse speed workrate and combo's

    nunn totally outboxed him
roy jones just did waht he was doing for his whole career and made toney look totally out of his depth.

i personally feel toney is to lathargic if somone tries to outmuscle him he wins simple as that. but when the other guy isnt engagin but just hitting and running he has to become a puncher not the counterpuncher... and thats where calzaghe will get him on the front foot and throw weak but many slap-attack punches for close first 7 rounds till calzaghe takes all the others becuase of toney' inabilty to fight well against slick swarmer.
    decision by calzaghe

    Class, observant post Vantage.

    I don't think it'd be a close decision, I think it'd be very clear in the realm of 116-112, 117-111, 116-112.

Calzaghe is all wrong for Toney. Although, Nunn's outboxing doesn't prove that Calzaghe would beat Toney, but it makes a good case that Kessler could.

    How about Kessler vs. Toney?

Kessler's quicker than Nunn and utilises better form, may very well have better timing and a better chin.

Could Kessler finish what Nunn started early on? Conservatively outbox Toney all night without getting KOed?

You know, this post may very well be garbage, because of Nunn's height and reach differences being the biggest factors...

P4P, Michael Nunn was better than Mikkel Kessler. Give Kessler time and that may change, but as of now, I'd definitely say Nunn was better P4P.
