Toney was maybe a little more better, but after summing it up I wasn't suprised with 114-114. Not a robbery but 116-111 Griffin is way off. How you saw this one?
I had it 6-4-2 Toney. Toney: 2,3,4,5,8,9 Griffin: 1,7,10,11 Even: 6,12 This is a really weird and inscrutable fight. Toney fought it so strange. He fought short early on, trying to come under his much smaller opponent's jab and land to the body. He does have success to the body throughout, but often at the expense of allowing Griffin to flurry. Sure, Griffin didnt have a great deal of success with these flurries, but to the unsighted naked eye...anyway, I can see, in fact, despite my scoring, why Griffin got the nod here. One of the odd things about the fight is that compubox numbers has Toney throwing more, but it feels like Griffin threw more, this is because Toney takes long resting spells, giving up a couple of rounds that he should have won but also because Toney missed, and was made to miss, often. Sometimes his hook was off by miles,big, big misses. That never looks good to judges. He also, inspite of the fact that he had great success with it, didn't bother to jab. Instead, he let himself be out-jabbed and then let Griffin define when he would come inside...he seems to lack ambition. Griffin, for his part, stayed tough despite getting hit by the far harder shots, stuck to the gameplan, wasn't intimidated and turned in a quite exceptional performance for such a green fighter. If he had closed out round three instead of getting hurt and nearly dropped...maybe he could have deserved the win instead of being handed it.
On my "to watch next" list. Just watched Toney v nunn, johnson and tiberi. I have his first two with mccallum and his 2 with griffin next.
Pretty true, Toney was too sloppy many times. He could make this fight much easier with more jabbing, but I feel that he wasn't in top condition. It was reported that he was 187 entering the ring with 5'7'' 175 Griffin. McGrain you score even rounds?
I try not to do that. I think that you always should find a winner of the round. Only in case of a point deduction I score fights even (like 12th round of Barrera-Hamed 9-9). Toney - Griffin I 9-10 10-9 10-9 9-10 10-9 10-9 9-10 10-9 10-10 10-9 10-9 10-9 117-112 Toney I had 9th round even because i thought griffin was landing a bit more throughout but there were 2 good counter rights by toney. especially the 1st one. In the 7th i just gave it to griffin because of that whole thing with toney falling onto the ropes, possibly saving him from going down. I thought he was more off balance but the ref could have called it a knockdown. could have been a toney round. The 3rd was a possible 10-8 for toney because he hurt griffin with a counter right that he almost went down from. from the replays of it he might have touched the canvas with his glove anyway. I just scored it a 10-9 for toney though.
That's basically the way I saw both fights. I thought the first fight could've gone either way, and in fact I thought Griff deserved a slight edge based on his aggression and workrate. However, I thought Toney largely controlled the rematch with better boxing and cleaner punching, while Griffin just swiped air. I thought the 2nd fight was a blatant robbery.
