    Interesting.

I say equally skilled, Hopkins is obviously the more discaplined.

    James Toney.

    Hands Down.

Bernard Hopkins is just more discaplined, but is still very very very skillfull.

James Toney was fat and overweight at Heavyweight but his skills still showed, no matter what physically condition he is in, he's like some kind of freak.

He can fight 12 rounds no problem "anywhere and at anytime", always relaxed....its like a inbuilt fitness.

hopkins i think is more technically skilled, toney is more gifted. you can create a hopkins with a textbook, a toney has to be born

James Toney was more skilled, but that doesn't mean he was more effective overall, because B-Hop was. Though I think the 1991 Toney beats the 2001 B-Hop at middleweight. Styles make fights, and I can see Toney landing the better shots and outmaneouvering Hopkins to take a close but clear UD. Styles make fights and all that.

Toney had skills, but he had deficiencies too. B-Hop honed himself into a very well-rounded, very complete fighter. In the period 1997-2003, he was among the best fighters I've seen on film. However, the James Toney of 1991-1994 was sublime when he was in the mood, some beautiful skills, but a certain type of fighter would always give James trouble. B-Hop was harder to beat, he would be a torrid night for any fighter. B-Hop would do better against a greater cross-section than James would. I can see someone like Sumbu Kalambay outpointing Toney more often than not, whereas B-Hop would lose only to the real middleweight elite (Robinson, Monzon, maybe Hagler).

I am a fan of both, though I have more affection for Toney.

Toney by a long shot. bernard is self made, trained and much more dirty and boring of a fighter. Bhop does only enough to win and while a crafty dirty boring boxer, Toney was born for this. he fights in the pocket like no one, counter like no one, chin of steel.

    Toney is a modern legend

Toney's skills are pretty much unmatched in boxing today.

How else could he do so well against physically stronger guys at higher weights?

Toney is more skilled. Though I think its difficult to judge because each fights using a different skill set and style.

As you will see above, I said Toney. However, I think this thread is becoming a landslide far too quickly, which doesn't reflect the reality. There was not a great gap between these two at all. Hopkins had skills that Toney didn't have, he did some important things better than Toney did. Let's not go overboard here.

Yep.... and actually, talking about in-fighting.. Roy Jones actually got the better of Bernard during their exchanges in their torrid rematch. Hops is highly skilled in the art of "run in head-first, chin down, land a punch and hold"

Wow, i think people are getting a little overboard. Yeah, Toney might have more natural skills as a boxer but Hopkins dedicated himself to perfect his game. Toney is like a polished diamond that got dirty while Hopkins was a rough diamond that kept getting cleaner and cleaner.

I know who i respect more. Hopkins, by a country mile. Discipline is the hardest thing to maintain. Natural talent is something you are born with. You don't have to work towards it. Toney was disciplined in his early years but got lazy. Hopkins is a man who hasn't taken a drink or smoked a cigarette for decades. Now that is impressive.
