By the same token, I find the very notion that Tito-Vargas is a better fight than Vazquez-Marquez III very odd indeed! I am indeed a fan of the Bowe-Golota fights... but they were in the 90s. PWNED. (joke )
:yep Well this discussion is arbitrary. Most of the fights on my list are interchangeable and could change depending on what day of the week it is. Vasquez-Marquez III better than MAB-Morales I? **** that. :bart
I would go for heart, courage and resilience because it is motivating. But i understand the appreciation for old school punching and technique, indeed it was a great fight to watch aswell (toney jirov).
I prefer it. The first time I watched MAB-Morales, at no point did I think either man was even going to get dropped, never mind stopped. The whole way through Vazquez-Marquez III, I was gripped with an intense excitement and apprehension that someone was going to get laid out. For me it just had a danger/suspense element that Barrera-Morales simply did not have. If we are talking purely excitement value here, I go strongly for Izzy-Rafa. Those were just my feelings watching the fights though. Objectively or in terms of skills, I wouldn't argue with anyone who goes for MAB-Morales, but when someone asks me about the "best fight", I usually take that as a question about excitement value. Only when I am asked about "favourite fight" do I consider my own preferences, technique, and such like. As I tried to explain to another poster earlier on this thread, Corrales-Castillo I round 10 is a more exciting round than Toney-Jirov round 12, so if someone asks me which is the better round, I'd say Corrales-Castillo. But if someone asks me which round is better for high quality boxing or which round is my favourite of the two, I say Toney-Jirov.
I consider it a better fight in terms of skill and technique, it is a higher class fight. I consider Vazquez-Marquez a better fight in terms of excitement value whilst watching. Much like I consider Toney-McCallum 1 a much better fight than Gatti-Ward 1 in terms of skill and technique, but in terms of drama/excitement etc, Gatti-Ward takes it, so if I was making a compilation dvd compendium(!) of "great fights", I'd put Gatti-Ward 1 in there on entertainment value.
I do think Vazquez-Marquez are underrated as a duo in terms of skills though, especially Rafa. People talk about them like they are two drunks windmilling at each other, but there is some quality offensive skills at work in those fights IMO. I love R.Marquez's punching form. Anyway, the final round of Toney-Jirov... your thoughts?
Great round, but it was made better than it was by the overzealous commentating by Emmanuel Stewart. Same thing with Gatti/Ward I.
I hear what you're saying, but I absolutely love Steward's commentating in that round. Gives me a shiver down my spine every time. Much like when the commentator screams "WHAT A FIGHT!" in the early rounds of Duran-Leonard 1.
Yeah, I love it when commentators are that hyped in a fight. It makes it more exciting for us all, I believe. I wish Stewart and Jones had been ringside for Barrera/Morales I.
