Believe it or not, Roy doesn't need Toney to make "serious cash". All he has to do is fight outside of the US...especially in countries with booming economies that don't get superstars(past or present) fighting there very often.
umm... isn't this fight supposed to take place in Russia?? But I agree in that both men will be able to make more money outside the US now. They're still legends in most parts of the world, while most US fans are known to jump on band wagons and not be loyal. That's why they're travelling around the world now, something they didn't do (and didn't have to do!) while they were in their primes
Well, yes...at least the fight will attract some media interest...expect the winner to get another decent fight
Boxing is at a sad point. Enjoy boxing while you can. Greedy fighters like Roy Jones, GGG, Mayweather and most of all Wlad Klitschko. They want to take easy fights and make big money.
Where is the proof that Toney is 216? If true it's a dangerous and stupid fight for Roy which will make almost no money and tarnish his legacy if he loses. If it is at heavyweight or cruiserweight he will almost certainly lose. Toney is a natural cruiserweight and Roy never belonged at cruiserweight.
I'm a Roy fan but he needs to retire asap. If the fight did happen then i'm giving it to Toney. Despite him being old and fat, he has the skills to knock an old RJJ out easy. RJJ has been gone for ages and his non-existent reflexes won't get him out the way of a Toney barrage. Toney wins by a KO or TKO.
I do not think this is an easy fight for Toney, as Jones is still quick with his hands. Toney has been fighting slow boxers for the last 10 years now. If Toney would win, expect him to fight Tarver or Charr next year.
His hands might be quick, but his chin isn't. He looks too easy to tag now and with Toney's skill at that weight, RJJ is a KO waiting to happen. Toney can still take the punishment and still stay up right, whereas RJJ hasn't got the punch resistance or reflexes left.
We shall see then....The fight will be at heavyweight at a catchweight. In my view, Toney should not have agreed to a catchweight, he looks comfortable at around 216 pounds now.
This is a far better match up than Toney VS Charr, Fury, Price, Wilder or any other younger heavyweights Its a fair fight , two all time greats who we can all agree are past thier best get the chance to fight and make a bit of cash , i would reckon Roy fights on purely because of his ego , where Toney probably needs the pay day and having the fight in Russia will give him the best chance of making some decent money
Toney could beat Charr though if in shape and properly trained by a decent trainer. A win for Toney would open some doors for him. I could see him fighting Tarver, Charr or Lebedev next.
Im not sure if the conditioning will ever be there to beat a fresher younger opponent , i like Toney and always support him but he did look completely out on his feet in the last round vs Gavern , can he ever get the conditioning to do a ten or twelve rounder vs someone like Charr ?
Here's Toney's FB update: "I cannot believe this! The coward (a.k.a. Roy Jones Jr.) has finally decided to grow a pair of balls and fight me again! I’ve been waiting almost 20 years for this! I’m signing my contract as soon as I get it, so Roy I hope you don’t punk out again and run away. Get ready Roy cause I’m going to f*cking hurt you bad, I promise you!" WAR Toney!!!
