Toney vs. Thompson is being billed as "Now or never", and to me, you couldn't find a more fitting theme for this fight. Toney absolutely needs to put on an impressive dominant perfomance to boost his status as a serious challenger for the Klitschko's. This is a classic "do or die situation" for him. If he can't live up to his own expectations, the "fat man" simply should call it a day. If he doesn't succeed to silence his citics by a Holyfield like performance, there really is no need for James to continue. He has done it all and already is a worthy future Hall of Famer. The focussed in shape version of Toney would definitely add some much needed attractivity to the HW division while as the fat, steroid enhanced, unmotivated version of Toney should simply disappear and let the younger generation take over.

James does not look great in the published pics of the pressconference which took place yesterday. If he does not get his ass into shape for this one, it is lightsout for his career.

If he does not get into good physical condition he does not deserve to win and needs to retire. I am concerned. He is 40 year old and fights for the first time in his career a 6 foot 6 fighter.

I expect him to be at least in the shape of his last fight (Rahman II) (226pounds). It is DO or DIE now.

Anyway, we won't see a Holyfield performance from James .

I don't want to comment on pictures taken at press conferences with suits on... and will simply wait for the weigh in to get a look at his pysical condition. I agree with you though in the sense that, if Toney can't at least match his Rahman II form, he will be in deep trouble against Thompson.

I'd argue his Rahman form wasn't even that great...it was only the third round when he started to get going, the first two were very nondiscript.

I agree, Toney really needs to boss Thompson about. I don't expect a stoppage or anything like that, though obviously that would be a massive boost to Toney, but a firm outboxing is in order if Toney is to really get back up there. Thompson's normally quite a busy fighter so picking his shots and countering sharply would seem the order of the day for Toney.

I don't know if he honestly can recapture his Holyfield again, that was 5 years and less wear & tear ago...but if he can look good then he's very viable.

A loss, obviously, is most likely the end.

I wanna see how Toney deals with Thompson's size. That McCline fight that fell through 4 years ago would have served him well as far as the experience against a true big man is concerned. Personally, I think Thompson takes this fight by decision. I like the matchup very much but Toney's been talking about taking on the giant Russians for years yet never steps in the ring with them. Maybe he thinks the Jirov win was enough.

Hmm...I'd say Toney-McCline would still be a pretty interesting and viable fight now too.

Firstly let me say I'm a Toney fan , but he hasn't been any good since Jirov. Thats the fact of the matter. Yes he pasted Holyfield but Holyfield was a small HW anyway and more importantly already shot to **** by the time James got him. If Calzaghe didn't beat the real Roy then James sure as hell didn't beat the real Holy.

All JT is doing now is ruining my memories of him. If he needs the money then fair enought fight on but if he is doing this out of pride he's a ****in idiot !

It hurts me to say that but thats how I see it.

I fully agree - Thompson's size will give us a clear indication of how competitive Toney can be with those with giant fighters... It's really a pity that the McCline fight fell through due to injuries in 2004. Beating McCline decisively back then would have proven a lot of things for Toney...

I understand your point of view although I think that Toney showed at least flashes of greatness against Guinn and Peter I. Nevertheless you are right to point out that Toney hasn't put on a masterful perfomance for some time now... it's time for him to do so!!!

Toney at cw in 2008... that's an illusion keep it real, the best weight Toney can do nowadays without seriously weakening himself is approx. 220 pounds...

  12. I don't see Toney beating Thompson at this stage of his career
