First, I would like to mention that this therad comes form a die hard Toney fan, who has loyally followed his career for over 15 years.
However, Toney's recent career moves are hard to understand and seem ill advised to say the least.

Toney's motto always was to fight the best "anybody, anytime anywhere". While Toney, at least to me, stayed true to his principles in most parts of his career, he recently seems to have changed by refusing to fight the best available opponents. Toney clearly has disappointed many of his loyal fans in recent months by his unwillingness to step back into the ring.
Moreover, he should stop talking about his garbage IBA belt, a title which doesn't mean anything in the boxing world. At this point, James has to take it on all corners to fullfill his lofty goal to compete for the hw title one last time. He needs to get back to training and fight a legit top contender at a reasanable weight! Fights against bums like Matthew Greer do not prove a thing, they certainly do not put pressure on the Klitschko's.
I understand that there is an offer on the table to fight Tony Thompson in April: Stay true to your motto James, fight Thompson and then go for the Klitschko's before age gets the better of you!

I really agree with this.James does not to realize that a victory over Toney Thompson would probably secure him a title fight this year and would also be his most impressive performance at heavyweight.Instead, James has become dellusional about his IBA belt.

James can't talk himself into fights with the Klits and Haye, he needs to beat a notable opponent, just like Tony Thompson.

There is no way he deserves a title shot. His recent record is poor: two losses to Peter, the draw with Rahman, he also lost to Oquendo quite clearly. Beating Thompson, who is very underrated, would probably get him one, probably Vitali after Sosnowski. But if he embarasses himself in the UFC against Kimbo instead then he has no chance.

Toney is a non-factor, these days. He's just getting older and will never be in shape again in his life. Maybe he'll try to talk his way to a Klitschko fight, take a payday to get starched or shell his way to a decision, and cash out for good.

Agreed, Thompson vs. Toney would easily qualify for an eliminator and determine a viable challenger Klitschko.

Toney needs to retire, he's showing classic signs of being punch drunk.

I can only agree with your post. I'm a huge Toney fan too, but very disappointed with his latest actions. That's what differs us from nuthuggers - we're fans but we can criticize the man when he's doing bull****.

I remember a time when Toney fought for a 12.500$ purse (the Richard Mason fight), just to stay active. Now that was after he already had been a 2-time world champ, and when his stock was probably higher than it is today. I can't understand why he's sitting around and wants to waste the little time he has left with MMA, I mean he obviously can't talk his ass into a title-fight with a Klitschko or Haye right now, and frankly he doesn't deserve one either. He has to get some good wins first. Facing Tony Thompson in april would be an excellent opportunity to get back on track, and I simply don't understand why he's not jumping on it.

A victory against Thompson would put him right back into title contention. Given the poor state of the hw division, a single victory is enough to secure a title shot.

I agree, with a potential mega $$$ fight with Klitschko on the horizon, he shouldn't care about the money issue when facing Thompson.

Yes and even if he fights Tony Thompson for chump change, he will cash against Vitali in later this year. The MMA is just a side show to gain more popularity.

1 title fight won in the last 15 years i think from memory for james toney.

never once has he ever fought on the road in all his fights and 2 failed steroid tests that would have him banned for life and castigated by the press if he boxed out of any country bar america.

great fighter at middle and super middle but people over etimate his acheivements from the time he left 168 to date.

1 winning title fight in all that time and one N/C or d/q .

If he beats Thompson, I think that Toney could be a hot topic again.

Pretty much. I hope he backs out because I want to see him keep his record of not getting ko'd.

No doubt. Just the way it is, I guess.
