I agree, one can only wonder why Toney does not take the Thompson fight as it is his only viable option at this point.

On the other side, it is really a shame that the young lions are ducking James Toney because he represents too much of a risk. But, hey it is how it is.

In a very recent interview given to fighthype, Toney seems to be willing to face Thompson if the mney is right:

A stated earlier, I think that Toney should fight Thompson regardless of the money that he's being offered in order to set up a bigger payday against the Klitschko's.

He fights him if the money is right! That is unheard of Toney! 'Anybody, anywhere, anytime', that's what has made him a legend, not 'if the money is right...'

As I said before, Toney fought guys for a 12.500$ purse when his stock was higher, he just fought for the sake of it. I don't think he would get less now fighting Thompson. And, as you rightly stated, he'll get a bigger payday down the road if he should beat Thompson (which isn't a given imo)...

Well, it seems that James has become dellusional. First of all he is not the big draw he claims he is and his IBA is garbage. James only fools himself with his views.

James may become a big draw again if he beats Thompson. He desperately needs a performance, talking won't get the job done. This is very disappointing for us loyal fans.

Well, I think we all agree on this. It's up to Toney now to decide whether he wants to make the fight happen.

It seems he´s going to MMA and thus won´t be boxing much more. He has had a terrible record in boxing as of lately and in no way deserves a title shot and maybe not even an eliminator. His two failed drug tests aren´t helping him either.

In his recent most recent interview Tony Thomposon has responded to Toney's concerns about the money issues as follows:

"You have fought for 25,000 dollars or lesss before. Now all of the sudden you are too good to fight for 25,000 dollars. You beat me,you are on the way to bigger paydays, you understand? Don't pretend it is about the money, I ain't even going to get 25,000 dollars for that fight."

Thompson pretty much summed up what we Toney fans wrote here. This is not the James Toney I supported for the last 15 years or so. Very disappointing.

James indeed seems to make up excuses for the 1st time of his career. I can only hope he reconsiders his position before the lights go out on his boxing career.

so all the youngins don't want to fight Toney, yet Toney doesn't want to fight Thompson ... hmmm

already mentioned by other posters but Toney needs to give the Klitschko's a reason to fight him ... mouthing off hasn't worked so why not as the TS suggests he get in the ring and win fights

Povetkin, Chambers K. Johnson and Arreola to name several contenders at HW either earned their shots by being ranked high or winning a title eliminator (in the cases of Povetkin, Chambers and most recently Peter) they won title eliminators

no reason that James Toney shouldn't be able to use his high WBC ranking to at least try and face better opposition in eventual hopes of setting up an Eliminator

^ because if Toney were to win an Eliminator then he could actually be in line for a title shot and talk all the smack he wants about being ducked and so on and so forth

**but with his move to MMA, so much for that (unless Toney plans to box as well in 2010)

True. Expect Kevin Johnson didnt beat anyone and wasnt ranked very high.

Maybe Toney dosent want to risk hes pay day in UFC, by fighting high risk low reward opponent in Thompson with only 25000 $.
