But Toney has always fought high risk low reward fights during his whole career. 'Anybody, anywhere, anytime'!

And I think Tony Thompson would be an excellent opponent to get back on track, maybe even get in line for a title or an eliminator if he (Toney) looks good.

Let's be honest, Toneys stock is at the lowest it has ever been, at least in boxing. He thinks he's the true HW champ, but even I think that's ridiculous.
This reminds me of Toneys 'dark years' back in the late 90s, when Toney fought on parking lots, only to come back and become the CW champ - only that Toney took every fight he could get back then, even if it was shitty, and he was 10 years younger. Toney has absolutely no time to lose now, and if he could get a televised fight against a ranked fighter like Tony Thompson, he should absolutely take it. I'm very disappointed that he didn't.

It is different to take risky fights for peanuts when fighter is young.
Things are little bit different when fighter is over 40, havent had big payday for couple of years.

If he wants to get title shot he should absolutely take it or fight no hopers every couple of months, to force eliminator match in WBC.

There is a risk however. Should he loose to Thompson or the eliminator for the title shot, he wouldn’t make much money and he wouldn’t probably get big UFC fight anymore.

If he wants to make sure money to retire with, maybe going in UFC is the better way for him.
His first match will generate good numbers and win or lose; he could still take boxing match, if some opportunity suddenly appeared.

That said I would rather see him staying in boxing, but I can understand that he needs money to secure his retirement.

I see it the other way around: only a title fight vs. Klitschko would sercure him enough money to ride into the sunset. MMA fights simply don't generate enough cash. Also, the risk to take serious damage is a lot higher in MMA, epecially for a guy with a lot of boxing mileage like Toney. Thruth is, that Toney doesn't seem believe in himself any longer and can't find proper motivation to jumpstart his boxing career again. Retirement would be the best option at this point.

at the time he fought Vitali I believe Johnson was ranked #5 or 6 by the WBC, maybe his undefeated record had more to do with him getting the title shot, but being ranked top 10 by the WBC didn't hurt

funny how Toney is considered high risk low reward and he doesn't want to fight somebody of that same nature

oh well, it looks like Thompson is going to be facing Jason Estrada next month on a Friday night Fights.

Read about Thompson facing Estrada too - this may very well end Toney's boxing career once and for all.

^ well Toney is fighting for the UFC, and a bad loss as an MMA fighter could kill his overall stock

Well, you are probably right, nowadays it seems to be only about the money for James Toney. The whole UFC is just about the money and of little interest for us Boxing Fans.

Toney could have made one last serious run at the title with the Thompson fight. Back in the day,James would have fought this guy, no question. And let's be honest, if he can't beat Thompson he has no business fighting the Klits.

There are some good news though, I have seen a recent video of Toney and he is in better shape again. (between 225-230 pounds). Talks abouth Koing Valuev and Kimbo slice.

You dont think that if Toney can get back with Freddie Roach, and have access to Alex Ariza's miracle shakes, he can get right back in the Heavyweight mix????:!:

Toney has a fat tongue, he needs to retire before he stops being able to speak altogether.
