just watched this fight for the first time in years and was surprised when i checked boxrec at how wide the cards were in favour of nunn i definately had toney coming back into it in the last few rounds and although nunn controlled ring centre toney did an excellent job at avoiding nunns punches and countering and landed with excellent counters quite consistently. Anyone else surprised at how wide the cards were? How did you see the fight before the stoppage?
Words like "schooling" and "dominating" were used to describe Nunn's performance before the stoppage by some. It most definitely was not anything like that. I havent watched it in a while..It was clearly a come form behind stoppage but I thought it was more an example of a perfectly executed gameplan then a desperate last minute knockout. With Toney's lack of output at first glance you can how rounds often went against him. But he is one of those fighters where you can go back and watch the fight again..maybe replaying a few exchanges in slow mo..and see how close he made it with deft defensive moves. Judges dont have that luxury, so you can see why maybe in this fight James wasnt getting much love. That being said Nunn was winning clearly, there is no doubt about it. Seeing as Nunn was the name fighter coming into this fight aswell those scores dont suprise me even if they do seem a little wide.
do you think nunn tiring had something to do with toney slipping a lot and investing to the body inside?
oh yeah im not arguing he was losing just looking back on it now it seems closer than the wide scorecards had it at the time
