Technically sound and legal TKO. The doctor made NO MEDICAL REVIEW of Rahman's cut (which btw was tiny, on the eyebrow and not bleeding imo) neither during the fight nor between rounds. Zero. Nada. Zilch. You can't argue that the fight doc stopped the fight because of the cut when he didn't even look at it. Had the doc stopped the fight because of the cut--after determining a stoppage was reasonable based of the severity of the cut after a close view of it--then the fight should have been a DRAW according to the California rules. As it stands, the fight was--and rightly so--ruled a TKO because of Rahman's inability to continue out of his own volition and not because of a physical impairment suffered via an unintentional foul deemed by a medical authority, after close medical inspection, to be severe enough to warrant stoppage.
The doctor never went so far as to say that: he says his investigation of the eye was based upon rahman's saying he cannot see - thus that was the doctor's inspection (right or wrong). Rahman never said he couldn't continue, said he couldn't see out of the cut eye and because of the cut. It's up to the doctor to do his job at that point if he disagrees and say Rock my inspection of the eye reveals you should be able to see.
NOT CORRECT if a fighter says he cant see thats it!!! if you have an example please share mate.., DAN LAW
Then what's the doctor needed for in that situation? Once the ref heard him say he can't see from the cut than it's over according to what you're saying.
Pretty much. Had the doctor called for a stoppage, it should be a no contest. Rahman called for a stoppage, therefore it's a TKO. I'm not going to say Rahman is a quitter, but he did jump the gun and should have allowed the doctor to make the call.
CLOSE BUT ONCE THE DOCTOR in this case and since we are in califonia HEAR the rock say it is over..,rock said the worst thing he could say. he should of let the doctor look at it and decide but the rock with his "i cant see' made the doctor stop the fight. youll never see a fighter say i cant see to the doc or ref and the fight continues.., rock ****ed himself.., he'll watch the tape and see what he did.., DAN LAW
As to say what? Yes he did. He told a ringside doctor in a professional sports match "I cannot see. I cannot see." Why do you think telling a doctor in a boxing match "I cannot see" means "I want to continue?" The ref at the post-fight interview also said it all: "Rahman said he couldn't see. And if you can't see=you can't fight." Rahman was telling the doc he couldn't fight. That's the way I understood it (and some here agree with that) and that's the way the doc also understood it. The ref had made no medical determination of the eye/cut, and frankly I don't think he had time to. All he heard when he went to Rahman's corner was " I cannot fight. I cannot continue."
After the appalling lack of common sense we're seeing from officials recently, I could care less tonight that the spirit of the law possibly outweighed the letter. No contests should be reserved for severe injuries in specific situations, not as an out for a fighter who doubts himself. Isn't Hasim Rahman the same fighter who went seven rounds with Holyfield while his cranium was entering it's second trimester? He fought through THAT then expects us to believe a minor cut has completely blinded his eye? If he couldn't see, why did he keep fighting for a minute and a half after the clash of heads? And the final reason this was completely just? It put me five bills to the good.
Yeah the first statement of mine was unclear. You said the doc made no medical inspection of the cut. But, the doctor said his inspection of the cut consisted of asking Rahman whether he could see allright, so that was his investigation (which is **** IMO but that's what it was). So he did do a medical investigation (albeit half assed). I heard the doc asking rahman if he could see allright (and clearly meaning can you see out of the cut eye ok) and rahman responded no. To me (knowing no specific rule on the situation) it's up to the doctor to say whether this means he can't continue. Fighters have fought with limited or no vision in one eye, so saying you can't see out of the eye doesn't necessarily mean it's impossible to continue. BTW, I think it was obvious that Rahman was indicating the blood made it difficult to see as he would clearly have some vision.
NAME me one fight where a fighter says he cant see to the doctor and the doc lets the fight continue.., i expect no reply to this post.., DAN LAW
Well the doctor should have looked at the eye before asking (The doc clearly did ask- twice I think), that would seem to be his job. Rock indicated clearly he had trouble seeing out of the cut eye (and he did so in response to questions from the lazy doc) and the doctor called the fight. I don't know, it ain't right. Also, I don't know how you guys can blame Rock? Like he said all toney needs to do is steel a couple of more rounds, the cut continues to open up, and he loses a decisioin. It was Goosen fight and Rock's eye was clearly bothering him so it's likely Rock would be behind on the cards by round 5 and once that cut continues to bleed, the outcome is sealed. Toney clearly headbutted him and any fighter with any sense would want the fight stopped in that situation (unless there sure they can get the ko or the clear lead in a round or two).
As if this happens frequently where there's an obvious cut from a headbut and the doctor doesn't really inspect but simply asks can you see allright man? Has this happend before? I doubt I'll get a response to this.
MATE no he shouldnt of once a fighter says that thats it mate..,that single phrase is the worst thing any fighter can say.., hey iron ive had a good time chatting with you the last couple of nights.., have you ever seen tim littles-james toney? DAN SEASON
Cool man, me too and i'm not doubting that you know more about boxing than me. I just think this toney/rahman situation was open to interpretation and argumetns could be made either way as to the legitmacy of the stoppage because it was just a ****ed up situation. Nah never saw the toney - little fight, i'll have to check it out.
