While I could care less about the winner of this fight, the TKO decision and how the whole matter was handled by the referee, the doctor and the commission are absolutely preposterous.
The cut wan't bleeding in to rocks eye! The bleeding was under control and ROCK knew the words to say to get the fight stopped....HOWEVER....Rock implied he didn't want to continue...NOT that he COULD NOT continue. He just said he couldn't see which implies to the Doc he doesn't want to continue....Rock never said that b/c of the but I can't see and I can't fight. He was trying to force the doc to say the cut was bad enought and wanted him to stop the fight for Rock. I see your angle but I think it's up to the commission to make the ruling and they did.
How does a fighter get awarded a TKO when the other fighter can't see as a result of an accidental headbutt before the 4th round? I mean what's next? If a guy gets KOed by a headbutt, is that considered a TKO? No.
Rahman said he couldn't see even though they had already patched it up. There was no blood in his eye and wanted out of the fight. He knew what he was getting himself into when he said that. He knew he was going to lose that fight, Toney was coming on strong.
I don't think he was saying he couldn't see because of the blood. He was saying he couldn't see because of the hit. Big difference. The cut wasn't that bloody.
never tell a ref you cant see..,the fight will be stopped on your words.., see czyz-holy see gatti-manfredy the point people are missing it wasnt the cut that made the doctor stop it. it was rock saying he cant see.once he said without the doctor even getting to examine the eye its over..,the ref didnt stop the fight once the cut occured for the doctor to check it. thats point1. if its a bad cut they will. see hagler-hearns see toney-littles(and this is how a real fighter handles a cut) point 2. if the rock woulda shut up and let the doc examine the cut it might have been stopped.FROM THE CUT.but without the exaning it he doesnt know why the rock cant see.so he must call the fight.most fighers wont say they cant see even if they cant.., see well **** it we all know fights that a guys eye has been closed and did battle anyway. really the rock didnt want to fight..,can you imagine toney or holy(see the seventh round of the holmes fight)wanting to stop? this way is better he didnt have to take a beaten or even have to gut out a tough win. funny in the prefight interview toney said"i was born to fight others had to learn it" sums it up right there DAN LAW
The fight wasn't stopped due to the butt! it was stopped due to the communication from fighter to doctor.! Simple.
Allright, I basically believe you about saying "he can't see" stops the fight. But, as to why Rock wanted out of that fight, don't you agree that it was most likely so he didn't suffer a loss on "cuts" later on (all they needed was one more round i think). I think you have to admit while that wasn't the worst cut, it was a gash and it'll continue to open up (I'm sure toney's gonna be aiming for it). All Toney had to do was take another round or two and once the fight is stopped it's a loss anyway for Rock. Although it appears Rock 'screwed up', I think his reason for doing so was pretty smart (admittedly not the bravest thing ever done). I mean Toney created the cut with his head (albeit apparently accidentally) to put rock at a big disadvantage (b/c of likelihood of early stoppage anyway w/ toney up 1 round or so) so why wouldn't Rock want the fight stopped.
Showing any signs of "*****-assness" in Boxing is unacceptable and rules out any possiblity of a win, NC, ND or any other decision other than a big Fat "L". No Bitchassness or BEYOTHCHNESS allowed in the sport of Boxing!:deal
I bet on Toney but I thought it was a bad decision until coming online and reading various threads. Now I am not so sure. I think the doctor should have stopped the fight (you have to) but ruled that the lack of vision did not appear to be from the butt (i.e. it was a bit of BS from rock) Also, I think it is fair to say that Rock expressed his desire not to continue because he was asked this question directly and repeatedly (if what I read is correct, I saw the fight too but don't remember perfectly) and he never said "Yes" instead he said that he could not see. anything but yes is no in this situation and I think the doctor has to stop a fight if a fighter says he cannot say because it could be due to a brain problem. However, the doc should have examined the cut before stopping the fight only because he could then have determined that the cut itself was not bad enough to stop the fight. Did the butt have a major effect on the third round or was Toney coming on anyways? I tend to go with Toney was going to get him anyways. First and foremost: Rahman deserves a third fight with Toney, although I don't know if he deserves a NC. I mean, this gives cause for any guy that gets butted to pull the "I can't see" card - if they are losing and it is still early in the match. If Rahman had caught Toney with a big punch after the butt, had him down even, I am pretty sure he would have started describing the shade of eyeliner on the women in the back row for the doc.
"I can't see" = "I Quit"....watch some old "I Quit" matches between Magnum TA and Tully Blanchard, or Flair and the Funkster.
youre a smart fella iron..,if the rock woulda waited one more round or 2 even the doc might of stopped the fight and they coulda went to the cards..,as fighters and fight fans weve seen way worse cuts..(dude you have to get a copy of tim littles-toney!!!) toney and rock created the cut..,always takes two..,unless it was intentional. rock shouldnt of wanted the fight stop because hes a fighter thats why.., did you see Vklit after they stopped it with lewis..,hell he wanted to fight even if he had to lose the eye..,you might not agree here iron but that what i beleive fighters do. the lesson here is always say"i wanna fight" dont ever give anyone the ref the doctor..,larry hazard a reason to stop a fight..,if they do well thats that but never assist!!!!! DAN LAW
Yeah I guess the lesson is to fight on till it's stopped and win or lose the fans will respect it and that's probably the most important thing. But as to Vitaly, it's a bit different b/c the cut was ruled as from a punch (and I think he knew this) and that's why the last thing vitaly wants is the fight stopped. Remember Vitaly is the same guy who quit because of his shoulder rather than finish out a fight vs the light hitting Chrisp Tbyrd where he had a big lead. I found Toney/Littles on Youtube but my quality wasn't good enough to see the cut and some of the action. But I learned that apparently toney was given a round before the fight was gonna be stopped and he got the the tko. Yes, that's the best way to handle the situation, but i think we all know rock didn't have that in him (tho I think he had enough to win the fight vs toney if he weren't cut).
regardless of our opinions the fact remains that we have a set of rules, and if we do not follow them then what is the point in having them? Bottom line is everybody knows when a accidental headbut causes a cut before the end of the fourth its ruled a NC after the fourth it goes to the cards, even newbie fight fans know this rule.
