This bout will be declared a no-contest eventually, I don't think it will affect either career much, Toney gained nothing and Rock lost nothing. Maybe their was a promotional incentive for either to win, that's about it. Actually I'd say both lost, neither won a TV date against a titlist or elimination bout, and they may end up fighting each other again for a lack of better option. It looked like Rock was in shape and Toney was sharp, it could have become an exciting and reputable fight for both guys, instead it will be forgotten within a week. While Toney looked good in the 3rd, you can't deduce an analysis based on the 3 rounds. It could have gone either way, fatigue, adjustments, and chin would come into play, we don't know how either would have fared. I really liked Chris Byrd's comments, he's a great guy and great broadcaster.
GOOD ? ITS THE SAME RESULT..,actually gatti did the same thing in the 8th round against manfredy.., rock shoulda waited for the doc to look at the eye..,if the doc said to bad of a cut then the ref would stop it hence a no contest.., rock jumped the gun..the doc was gonna look at the cut but rock just maid his job easier..,ive seen it before. no worries mate DAN LAW
All I'm saying is, either way, the doc should have been more thorough. On the NC side, if it was his intent to stop because of medical reasons, out of concern for Rock's health, he should have examined the eye, and if his medical conclusion was that it was bad enough to stop the fight, he should have...making it an NC. On the TKO side, if he'd not yet determined there was a medical risk in letting Rahman continue, he should have either a) examined the eye and given the ref the recommendation "I think he should be perfectly good to go" regardless of what Rock was saying about being able to see, or b) explicitly asked "Do you feel you're fit to continue?" to force Rock to make the call himself. If Rock says he can't continue, and the doc disagrees, then it's a clear, unambiguous retirement - a true, clean, unimpeachable TKO. Either way the doc should have been more thorough. It should not have been stopped based on Rock saying "I can't see". It should have been a NC or TKO based on the examination that never happened (rendering either decision - NC or TKO - tainted).
They should've asked Hasim if he could continue and, if he says yes, then let the fight progress into the 4th. If the eye continues to impede him in the 4th, then the doctor could stop the fight and have a NC. Since the doctor didn't even examine the cut and make a judgment on whether he could continue or not, the cut shouldn't have been a factor in stopping the fight. I love boxing, but I hate the errors: if it's not the judges, it's the ref or the doctor. I was looking forward to seeing "Lights Out" get back into form too.
Exactly. He should've covered his ass by saying "Rock you want to continue the fight? Can you continue?" Instead he took "I can't see" and automatically deduced that the fight was over and that Rahman had given up. It's a situation where five more seconds of questioning could've saved a lot of people five months of contreversy.
Does anyone disagree fundamentally with this post? Can we just call this the definitive analysis, with the definitive conclusion that we got screwed out of a proper decision no matter what (appeal or no) and move on? I think I've really pretty much nailed it, given what I know about the rules, and what I saw. If anyone wants to correct me on any factual error, by all means do so. Barring that, I think I've pretty much nutshelled the situation right here.
if anything i think they proved in 3 rounds that a fight between them can still be an entertaining affair and worth watching. Probably the best rating that Best damn sports show has had in a while My opinion on this fight remains that the rules should be followed and therefore the bout ruled a NC. The doctor made a mistake by making his judgement entirely based on Rahman's words rather than actually examining the cut which is what he is supposed to do. If the doctor examines the cut and clearly tells Rahman that he has to continue, but Rahman still quits, then its a TKO for Toney. What happened tonight was rediculous
Well you may know that, and Rock himself may know that, but technically the doc has to make sure everybody knows that beyond a shadow of a doubt by putting the responsibility on Rock (and off his own shoulders) by framing questions that make him say the actual words. Doc needs to know he's on tv.
LOOK gentlemen if a fight says he cant see thats the end of the fight...,see holy=czyz.., he cant ask if a fighter wants to continue..,hes not allowed the rule here is clear i know because of a heaD butt everyones getting crossed.., but TKO3 is the correct call DAN LAW
