Toney - Thompson in February

If he loses to Thompson (and after his last fight I don't see any reason to think he can win) his chances to get a title shot won't get any better.

...unless his plan is to target WBA belt by pretending he is completely shot, which combined with good name should be enough for Valuev matchmakers.

always liked oquendo, but toney losing to him reiterates that he is not a 'top contender' in the hw division. put a fork in toney, cuz he's done

 

I don't mind seeing Toney fight as much as I hate seeing Holyfield. Toney's defense has allowed him to fight this long without taking serious damage in the ring. He may not be very exciting to watch, or have the skills needed to be anywere near the top, but at least I am not scared for his health.

 

Expect the little fact that Toney won that fight.

 

meant to write "arguably losing" but even if toney deserved a very close debatable decision, the point is that the fight shows again that toney is not a top contender. his last good performance was peter 1 and peter is barely a 'top contender' himself. then peter beat up toney. toney can still hang with some top 25 guys but that's about it.

 

you're kidding right. the "fight" went 3 rounds or something and rahman was having success unitl the cut, toney then landed some good shots, then rahman got the fight stopped. neither guy deserved a w and neither guy looked good even if toney was in shape. the point is that beating or doing well versus hasim rahman (the recent version) does not make one a top hw contender

 

I agree wholeheartedly with Blade. This fight needs to happen. Toney is not a contender anymore, but he may still beat a legitimate contender in Tony Thompson. I mean this fight was to happen anyways, and to be honest it's probably a good thing Toney faced Oquendo on Saturday instead of Thompson. And why not do it in February, since there seem to be no obstacles (aside from a vacant TV slot?). Goossen better act quick now, arrange the fight at some Casino in Cali and announce and promote it. I don't even care if it's an eliminator anymore, well it could be an eliminator for a #3 spot. Toney is best when he fights often, and he certainly has to do a lot better than he did on Saturday if he wants to beat Thompson, who is a tall, awkward and dangerous southpaw. I tell you how it is: if Toney doesn't get his fat ass down to at around 220lbs for this one he will lose, and lose badly, and he will deserve to lose. His career would be finished, and that's guaranteed. If he can't beat someone like Tony Thompson clearly he should retire. Our patience with Toney isn't endless, so let this fight happen - a DO OR DIE fight for Toney..
