According to several sources including Espn's Dan Rafael, Toney's camp is close to signing a deal with 7 foot ex-champ Nicolai Valuev. The proposed date would be May 29th. I find that hard to believe as Valuev is reportedly in line for an immediate title shot against Haye or an eliminator within the WBC. Should this fight nevertheless materialize, Toney would have to face a height disadvantage of 1 foot! against the Russian giant... Nevertheless I feel that Toney may have enough left to win a decision, should the fight take place in the States.
It does not make any sense to me. Valuev is about to face Haye. Why would he take that fight with Toney under those circumstances? Besides, didn't Toney sign up with Dana White/UFC? I doubt that Valuev will fight a WBC elimination fight. Why would he do that? He was offered to fight WBC champion without it and he refused. It is crazy.
What? A Toney-Valuev fight just doesn't make any sense on so many levels. Edit: Ivo above me explained it to a T.
I find it hardly credible either. However, as Dan Rafael isn't known for putting any rumours out without proper research, I could see the following scenario playing: Valuev isn't interested in fighting an eliminator, especially not against a dangerous opponent like Solis / The Valuev fight is not an attractive option for Haye as there is virtually no public demand for a rematch of these 2 / Valuev is looking for a fighter who adds some luster to his resume without being too much of a thread from his perspective: enter James Toney.
This fight would be good for Toney. If he has anything left, he should be able to get past Valuevs jab and outbox him on the inside to get a decision. I mean, Larry Donald, Evander Holyfield, and arguably even John Ruiz did it. It would also be interesting to see little Toney handle such a tall opponent. But we've been disappointed so many times during the last couple years with Toney that I don't think this fight will happen..
tony would in this fight.and remember his a boxer 1st and mma fighter 2nd.hes going to do both, dana is still trying to find the right match up for toney for his mma debut.
I agree, Toney will push back his MMA commitment if a high caliber HW fight materializes before summer.
He won't face Valuev in May, he's only at 50% shape now, so that's worse than this: This content is protected
