The fight was meant to have happend in August 2003, Toney had just beat Jirov and I for one as a big fan of both fighters was looking forward to a fantastic fighter from 2 of the best fighters around. Hopkins had actually signed the contract to fight Toney for $3.5 million but Don King changed the deal he suddenly asked for Hopkins to accept about half of what was contractually agreed. Toney agreed to a smaller pay cut as he was already getting the smaller share but Hopkins who has had a history of being screwed over by promoters wouldn't budge and I for one don't blame him. I would favour Hopkins then and now. Cruiser weight version of Toney is too slow and immobile. Prime for prime is tougher to call as Hopkins was much more aggressive in his youth and his speed and mobility would be less of a factor. No chance Toney makes 200lbs anymore though he would be too drained.
as much as fat joks go toney is the far bigger man. toney was struggling with weight early in his career before he became a compulsive eater. while hopkins was making 160 for years way into his adult age. hopkins at cruiser could be a bad idea. but i would of loved to of seen this at 174 or 168 years ago. maybe a boring fight but then atleast you get the trinity of toney, jones and hopkins
Hello again jackass, how did it feel to see Pavlik lose?, I see you found a new replacement already. Toney?! :rofl:rofl
Hopkins would take hm apart! Toney would be too weight drained, plus he's too old in ring years, where as Hopkins in my opinion is in his peak! That's right he's 44 years old but he's in he's peak still, trust me, he's last four fights have been against top ten pound for pounders and clearly beat three of them. I think the Calzaghe fight was an off night for him though.
I am a big fan of both fighters, but I wouldn't welcome this fight. Hopkins proved against Pavlik and Calzaghe that he is still capable of performing at a very high level, whereas James hasn't looked good since the first Peter fight, and at Toney's age that fight was a long time ago. IMO Toney's peak was around 1991 (his best all-round performance was the first McCallum fight which I felt he won clearly), though he was also superb around 2003 around the time of the Robinson and Jirov fights. If 1991 Toney fought 2001 Hopkins at 160, I have no idea who would win. It would be a fascinating fight between two great talents. I can't see how 2003 Toney could have fought Hopkins because I can't see how Toney could've cut 15lbs to make lhw (plus there was talk of a big-money rematch with then hw Roy Jones after he beat Jirov), and I doubt Hopkins would've wanted to go up 15lbs when he could sense a big-money fight with Oscar De La Hoya just around the corner at 160. This fight was just never realistic. I wish it had happened, but it didn't, and I don't see the point in it now. But those press conferences would've been something special alright!!
far bigger man my ass 5'9 in james toney couldve made a career at middleweight but he ate himself all the way up to heavyweight while through a strict regimen of training and proper nutrition bernard always stayed in shape no matter what. doesnt matter when or where even today at heavy weight nard would be the first man to knock james toney spark out just like he did to tito, and oscar delahoya. either that or it is an ugly beating like he gave pavlik, tarver, wright
The fight in 2003 was originally agreed to be at Cruiserweight so Hopkins would have jumped up 3 divisions and 30lbs which is why he wanted so much money. He knew it was a risk and wanted to be compensated for taking such a risk.
Why,because he beat limited Kelly Pavlik? When a guy like Jermaine Taylor gets 2 decisions against him, that would prove that Bernard is definitely not peak.
God, I hate to say it, but as faded as Toney is, I wouldn't mind seeing this even now. It would have been much more interesting about 8 years ago, but what the heck, two of the craftiest fighters of the last 25 years would be fun nonetheless just to see the defensive moves they'd throw at each other. To the rest of you, I wouldn't be so sure Toney couldn't get to 200 if he wanted to with the right incentive. He's carrying pure fat that could be worked off. He's 40, not 70.
