Watched nunn v toney a few days ago again. What struck me was, even though James had his moments before the ko, how far in front nunn was. Those early rounds toney was struggling like heck to get anything going against him. Of course toney did eventually catch him in the eleventh, but what if they'd rematched immediately.? Toney is now a well respected old school fighter but could he have lost a rematch? I no that nunn soon moved up in weight but I'm sure he would be able to take this one at middle. Iyo does lights out beat, possibly stop nunn again or is nunn able to get the win.? I have a feeling nunn could pull this one off. It would be a more cautious nunn this time and toney would be confident coming in but nunn was a excellent boxer and toney always struggled against the movers.
This fight ruined Nunn. Similar to 130lb Nate Miller. Was schooling underdog Robert Peden and dropped his hands and boom left hook over . Rematch 7 months later this time for world title Peden destroys Miller in 5. Toney vs Nunn rematch Toney destroys a shellshocked Nunn in 6 by ko again. This content is protected
Hi jup, good to hear from u. Yep that can certainly happen in cases. Fighter a is beating fighter b when suddenly b comes from nowhere to ko a. A is never the same again. Similarly to marciano v Walcott. I get you're point mate. I myself think that nunn would have done it this time but with a lot more scary moments along the way. You always do a great post jup.
I think Nunn could have done it with a good camp and the right approach. He gave him hell the first time round.
He did for sure. The rematch may have been a lot closer but as long as nunn kept alert and focused I think he had the tools to out point him. He d almost done it the first time so it was with in him to do it.
I had Nunn winning five of the first six rds, possibly one even, and Toney winning rds 7-10, so Nunn wasn't going towards a shoe-in points victory in my book. Time was working in Toney's favor, so I'd have him as a favorite in a rematch.
Some years later they sparred in a gym when Toney's partner never turned up. Rumour has it Michael sat James on his ass in the first round and the spar was quickly called off. Don't let anyone tell you Michael wasn't a special talent, unfortunately after you lose the title nobody want's to risk losing their meal tickets. Two greats, ones a classic boxer/fighter and the other a fighter/boxer. Both had great careers but with some discipline could have been spoken about as greats of the industry.
Toney wins. Nunn was never the same fighter after the Toney fight. Toney did the same thing to Jirov.
Nunn was already past his best at the Toney fight. The last prime fight of Nunn was against Kalambay, so Toney probably stops him earlier in a rematch.
