Toney wide UD. As shown against Rahman, Toney is still one of the best technically skilled fighters in boxing, even if he doesnt have the physical abilities or discipline to back it up anymore.
BTW, Toney by wide UD. Like Danny Rand wrote, the skills are still there, and Toney looked better against Rahman than in a long while - not only did he slim down to 226lbs, he also did subtle defensive tricks that we haven't seen in a while. So he's not shot, he still has something left. Unfortunately he couldn't prove it because Rahman quit, but as soon as he started to warm up (remember Toney came from a long layoff and is a slow starter) he looked good. He would have schooled Rahman regardless if the cut happened or not. Rahman realized that and looked for a way out. I believe Toney will look the same this time as he did against Rahman five months ago.
This is the ticket and as another poster said, just to hear the post fight interview from Toney is reason enough to watch!
Toney is a lot better than most guys and especially Oquendo. This is a typical Toney fight. Fighting someone he is better than and winning a late round knockout or decision. Fighting Ruiz and not fighting Lennox or was it Klitchko at the time to win a title and then saying he is the heavyweight champion, yet he needed steroids to beat a guy as terrible as Ruiz. Sorry folks I just think Ruiz was a joke as a heavyweight champion and the fact he was champ says a lot about the division when he is champ. Alot!!!!!! Look Toney is a good fighter, but this is another boring win against another contender. James will get to the title shot soon and lose again. Although I would love to see him fight the Klitchkos who I think are overrated. James high skill level vs. the size of the Klitchkos.
yeah Toney is good but too inconsistent. We have to wait for him to decide when he is going to train and if he does maybe it will be a good fight. That right there is not a great fighter to fight only when he thinks he can win or when he is inspired. The skills are there but the record is not spectacular as a whole. And most guys he fights are lower level contenders.. He never really did fight the top guys like Virgil Hill or a rematch with Jones or any of the top guys at Cruiserweight and Light Heavyweight. I know I ranted here, but he frustrates me because he had so much skill but he never really put it all together. He beats Oquendo not matter what. Probably late round stoppage.
I understand your frustration with Toney, I too was frustrated when he didn't care to take training seriously when he fought for a title, like his title-shot against Rahman I and so on.. The reason for this is that Toney is so ridiculously talented that he thinks he doesn't have to train seriously, and while he came away with that attitude more than once it also backfired on him (Thdazi, Rahman I...) and led to the split with Bill Miller. Toney didn't even train seriously for Roy Jones! that was just ridiculous. Toney never reached his full his potential because of this ****. His record is still great tho, and he did fight the top guys - at MW and SMW he faced a who is who of fighters while at CW he beat Jirov who was the man to beat there. He wanted a rematch with Roy Jones for years (but ate himself out of it). He's still fighting top guys at HW (except for the Klitschkos), as you know Oquendo is just a late minute replacement.
To be fair Toney was scheduled to fight a lower top-ten HW in Tony Thompson, who got sick. That would've been a very risky fight for Toney at this point. Oquendo is just a late minute replacement, a win against him doesn't lead Toney anywhere and he is certainly not too happy about it. And Toney certainly didn't need roids to beat Ruiz - and that's the irony of it!!! He still took them when he didn't have to, and he got his just reward - he got stripped of the title. Ruiz was certainly not a great beltholder, but he was better than people make him out to be - it's just that he was so damn boring and unpopular. Ruiz arguably beat Valuev in their first fight, and the rematch was close too - although Valuev is not a good beltholder either.. And I don't think James will get a title-shot anytime soon, and certainly not after this setback.. (Tony Thompson getting replaced with Oquendo that is)
Hopefully, Toney has not let training down once he was informed of the new opponent. I am sure Toney wins this one. But again, Goossen needs to reschedule the Thompson-Toney fight . I am pretty pissed right now because normally they communicate a reschedule immediately after the scheduled fight falls apart.G Goossen better get it together right now because he is again letting us fans down with his passive acting. I mean Toney still has a loyal fan basis but he does not seem to be a top priority for Goossen anymore.
In his fight with Oquendo, Toney needs to put up a dominant impressive performance. He needs to show the audience some of his old school magic in order to bring his contender status back to life. Especially now, with the switch of opponent to the faded Oquendo, Toney is under huge pressure to prove that he still has it at 40! Another unmotivated outing will further destroy his market value and put future bigger paysdays in serious jeopardy... Toney TKO 9
Toney by clear UD. After this match Toney should get eliminator match for one of the major titles. Maybe they could reschedule Thompson fight and make it an eliminator like it should have been in a first place.
Yep, and a dominant performance should give Toney a ranking among the top 10 with the boxing organizations again - which is important to make a future rescheduled fight with Tony Thompson an eliminator. However, since Oquendo is a runner and doesn't come into fights to win, but to survive, I don't think Toney will score a stoppage - I predict a shutout win for Toney.
I completely agree with you, Toney by wide UD. In the end this situation could even turn out beneficial for Toney, a dominant shutout win over Oquendo would put his name back in the minds of the boxing fans and experts, he would get ranked with the organizations again so that Toney-Thompson could be an eliminator - which was not the case had the fight happened as planned.
Goossens top priorities are obviously rising star Paul Williams and HW prospect Chris Areola. He wouldn't put his veteran HWs Toney and Thompson against each other if they were his priorities, cause obviously the losers career would be finished (especially Toneys). I agree Goossen has to reschedule Toney-Thompson, that's the only logic thing to do. I mean Thompson got sick, not severely injured, so the fight should be rescheduled soon, regardless of Toney fighting Oquendo now. This time Goossen should try to make this fight an eliminator tho. The worst thing that could happen to Toney now is him having stopped training last week out of frustration and not taking Oquendo seriously and then coming in in bad shape again and ending up with a close controversial decision like he did against Batchelder... I don't think this will happen tho, every fight is DO OR DIE for Toney at present and he (should) know it - so I'll say Toney by wide UD, maybe even shutout decision.
