Toney vs Couture....Is the UFC handing boxing a gift?

Can't believe some people are still giving Toney a good chance here. Must be missing something, is there footage of toney out there submitting guys and defending takedowns or showing that toney has somehow turned back the clock to 2003? Yes couture is 47 and a little chinny (is the chin really that bad??) but toney's old too and has been showing sings of brain damage for a couple of years. Couture is gonna keep his chin tucked a little extra and swarm toney and it should be over from there depending on how couture wants to do it. if this were a prime, quick, tough boxer there would be more reason for concern but c'mon this is 40 year old james toney looking for a better payday then he could currently get in his own sport (cuz of a few less than spectacular performances)

 

The thing about Toney is if he is taken lightly up close is what I wonder. Couture has a good inside game where he stuffs guys against the fence and uses the dirty boxing. Toney is very slick inside that area, and if you watch his fights, he lands frequently with short uppercuts.

I don't like the prospect of Randy trying to dirty box with Toney, even with Toney's back to the cage.. He might get schooled at his own game. Toney may not have serious power, but he has fast hands, and with four ounce gloves coupled with Couture's crackable chin, it could be, "lights out" if he isn't wary of Toney.

 

I agree, I have a bad feeling Couture is gonna be stupid.

 

Thats the only real chance Toney has in my opinion. Couture shouldn't be stupid enough to do it but i think he will. A short shot from toney with those gloves and Couture looking a bit shop worn you never know.

Also I'm beginning to hate a lot of fighters doing dirty boxing off the cage i know its an effective tactic but its a real eye sore at times.

 

Couture will work the legs and then go for the take down. Toney has never had to worry about leg kicks, being rushed for a take down, and grappling. A straight standup boxer can't win and the same goes for a grappler in a boxing rule.

Toney is in it for the money and Dana White is in it to say his guys are better then boxers.

 

UD ? Dude if Couture takes Toney down he aint getting up. I dont see how an out of shape, shot boxer with no grappling experience is going to succeed where guys like Gonzaga, Belfort and Coleman failed when it comes to try to survive agianst Couture on the ground.

 

I can say this, and I can say it with certainty:

If Toney wins it really doesn't say much about boxing in MMA that we didn't already know. Not an enormous deal.

Also, on the flipside to that coin, if Couture wins, it doesn't say anything bad about boxing either.

Couture has to be somewhere in the range of a 8:1 favorite or better. But, Toney still has a punchers chance. He has to KO him standing. Has to. He going to follow him to the ground? Not likely.

 

Don't open a betting shop.

Couture was chosen for a specific reason from a PR perspective, he is older than Toney, and also past his best. So when Couture beats the **** out of that fat ****, the excuses, while still many, will be fewer.

 

I'm not saying I think Toney will win. I'm saying he has a chance given ONE of Coutures strengths that he usually utilizes..

The thing about Randy, he has won fights against monsters because he utilizes a great game plan, and is one of the smarter guys in the game. I wouldn't expect him to overlook how dangerous Toney potentially is on the inside.. There is no reason for me to think that he would opt to give Toney a chance standing when he is going to be absolutely helpless on his back.

I expect this to finish in under a round, gnp or maybe Couture decides to shoke the **** out of him. I only bring up the dirty boxing because its something Couture usually uses to break guys down, and does so routinely.

 

I mean I see your point and don't mean to insult your intelligence, I just don't see him putting himself in any danger or even considering it.

 

It's not really a gift to boxing because Toney is not at all expected to win.

Couture = Old Well Conditione Martial Arts Expert.

Toney = Old Poorly Conditioned Boxer.
